The motel’s chipped paint and rattling AC hit me like a slap from my old life. I’d insisted on facing Emma alone. Claire and Elena protested, but this was my fight. I needed to bury ghosts from my past for good.

Emma opened the door. She was impeccable as always. Her blonde hair was nicely tied in a neat bun. It looked like she had gained some healthy weight, and there was a natural glow on her skin. It didn’t take long for me to know the reason. Her loose sundress clung to the natural swell of her belly. She was pregnant, maybe six months or more. The realization hit him like a freight train.

“Elliot,” she called with a smile. “Thanks for coming.”

I leaned against the wall by the door. My mind was reeling. The sight would have been a bliss a few months ago. Now, it was repulsive. I didn’t want to show how much it affected me. So, I kept my distance from her. “What’s this about, Emma?” I asked.

Her smile fell at my flat tone. She sank on the neatly made bed. “I’ve been looking for you for months,” she started. “You vanished after we broke up.”

“I had nothing left to stay for,” I cut in. “Get to the point, Emma.”

Her face crumpled. “I panicked, Elliot. You had it all planned. Your life, our marriage, the kids. You were going too fast. It scared me shitless. Mike was a mistake, a fling. I didn’t love him. I love you. I want us back.” Her hand reached for me.

I stepped back from her. “Too fast, you say? We were together for four years. I was always vocal about my dreams...” I said. I paused to get my bearings. “We’re done, Emma. I told you that when I walked out. I’m not angry anymore, but there’s no us. Not now, not ever.”

A look of pain flashed across her face. “You’ve changed,” she whispered. “You’re so ... cold. The Elliot I loved would’ve fought for us.”

“The Elliot you loved was blind,” I shot back. “I was too numb when we spoke last, but I was clear on the end of our relationship. I would never fight for what isn’t mine.”

She swallowed hard. Her hands rested on her belly. “I’m six months pregnant, Elliot. I think it’s yours. You remember that night after the game launch party. You were angry about me not spending enough time with you. You were drunk. We fought, and then you fucked me hard on the couch. No condom.” Her voice softened. “We can still be a family. You always wanted that.”

Her words hit like a gut punch. She was using my buried dream to negotiate. She might have wrecked me a week ago, but not anymore. My dream was secure in the steady hands of Claire And Elena. Emma’s offer was tainted by her lies. It felt hollow.

“You are making it sound like I forced you,” I said while keeping my voice steady. “We barely fucked before that. I wasn’t as drunk as you imply. I recall it was your safe day. It was also the last time we were together. You were with Mike even before that day. How do I know it’s not his?”

Her face flushed. “You think I’m lying? I fucked up, I know. You just disappeared after you found out. Do you even know how difficult it was to track you down? I’m scared, Elliot. Mike’s pissed about the baby. I’m praying it’s yours.”

I looked her in the eye. “Praying’s not proof,” I said. “We’ll do a DNA test. Non-invasive, safe for the kid. I’ll pay to rush the results. If it’s mine, I’ll step up for the child. No question. But you and me? That ship’s fucking sunk.”

She was angry now. “Fuck you, Elliot. Get off your high horse,” she shouted. She paced around the room to calm down. “Yes, I fucked Mike a few times. Big deal. It was just skin against skin. Don’t tell me you have been celibate all this time.”

I looked at it calmly. Maybe she was right. “I don’t think we were on the same page about our relationship,” I whispered. “Look, I know I was uptight about a lot of things. Maybe I would have explored more if you had put in some effort. But you getting involved with Mike was a deal breaker. As I recall, you weren’t so upset about our breakup. What changed now?”

“You just don’t get it, Elliot,” she whispered. “You have spoiled me for Mike. He was fun when things were fresh. He is good, but he is not you. I didn’t know how much I needed you until you were gone.”

How come I never saw this before? I wondered. She was always this entitled. She still had no remorse. The truth dawned on me slowly. I was truly blind to see the real her. The Emma I had loved only existed in my mind. The woman in front of me was not her. She never was.

“There is no point in rehashing the past, Emma. Let’s go to the Clinic now. We can talk after we sort out the paternity issue.” I said calmly.

“I don’t like this new you, Elliot,” she said slowly.

I didn’t respond.
