Nova Nine – aka Kori DeWitt – floated in the bath and closed her eyes.

She...

She was not sure how to feel. The world had been saved. Darkthornn was defeated. And still, things kept turning. The sun kept rising and setting. Her Mom and her Dad would keep going on adventures. She would head to college in a few months, and get a degree. And ... she’d keep being a superhero, a metahuman, a cape, whatever you wanted to call it. She opened her eye one crack, frowning as her ears drooped.

“Feels weird,” she said, her voice soft.

The door to the bathroom cracked open and a voice called in. “Can I wheel in?”

“Sure, Barbs,” Kori said, her ears perking up as she sat up. The door opened and Barbs wheeled into the bathroom, her hands working the wheels, her face looking as tired as Kori felt. She grinned and leaned one arm on the armrest of her wheelchair, her head cupped in her own palm.

“I came here cause I realized something – you’re probably feeling the crash.”

Kori leaned her head back against the inside lip of the bathtub, her eyes looking up at the ceiling. “Billions of people almost died today, and we defeated...” She hesitated. “Did you hear Darkthornn’s backstory? When he was giving his speech?”

“I watched the review footage that the UN put out for sphinxes,” Barbs said, shrugging.

“ ... sphinxes?” Kori asked.

“Oh, sorry, hyperbrain slang for N to the 3rd plus level intellects,” Barbs said, shrugging again. Her grin was rueful. “Though, gonna be honest, lots of sphinxes keep debating as to if people at a lower tier of intellect get to count. N to the 1st power intellects are very, very, very fast to remind everyone that while N to the 2nd level intellects are quite smart, they are also prone to obsessing over whose an official sphinx, while true sphinxes are comfortable sharing the title. Which honks off the 2nd level intellects, who then get snippy about 3rd and 4th level intellects, and so on, and so forth.”

Kori’s brow furrowed. “You know, I’ve heard a lot about the top three tiers. What’s a 4th tier Nth level intellect?”

“Exocortex but within human parameters,” Barbs said, leaning back in her wheelchair. “Imagine someone exactly as smart as Mom or Dad or Corvi, but they never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever get anything wrong ever. So, they can’t tell you how to solve for immortality, or how to go FTL, but they will always remember the last time you forgot the birthday cards.”

“ ... are they sphinxes?” Kori asked.

“Fuck no!” Barbs laughed and leaned forward onto her knees to grin down at him, before settling in her chair. “But, uh, back to you. You’re feeling that weird sensation that, like, everything should be over. That ... there should be a big pause and a floating ‘the end’ over everything. And instead, you’re still here.” She pointed at her. “There’s no end credit roll, no curtain call and bow and happily ever after.”

“Y-Yeah,” Kori admitted. She pushed her hands through the water – focusing her a tiny twitch of her brow to reheat the molecules so that it didn’t slip from comfortable to tepid. She bit her lower lip. “Like, how the fuck do I just go to college after all this? What do I do if I run into a bank robber? Like.” She hesitated. “Fuck.” She laid her head back and sank deeper into the water, her nose almost bubbling against the surface. Her eyes half closed and she glowered at the silvery faucet at the far end of the bath.

“Yeah,” Barbs said. “I felt the same way after the Chronovore. And I know Mom and Dad felt the same way after Sol Invitus and the War of 99.”

Kori lifted her head up a bit, just so she could speak. “How did you get back to normal?” She paused. “In as much as normal is a word you can use?”

Barbs shrugged. “I took it one day at a time.” She wheeled closer to the bath, reaching down to ruffle her sister’s hair. Her smile was gently. “You’d be shocked how fast to normal things get. Human brains are really bad at being abnormal. Everything settles back down and you get on getting on.”

“ ... that’s kind of fucked up,” Kori muttered.

“We’re a weird fucked up species,” Barbs said, smiling cheerfully. She paused, then stood. Her knees trembled and she stretched her arms above her head. The faint hint of pain on her face made it clear what an effort this was. “Make bath bigger and TK me into it.” Her voice was playful as she took hold of her top, tugging it above her head with a flourish, revealing her cute, lacy black bra and her sleek, toned tummy. She got a ton of work on her upper body strength and it showed. Kori gulped as she waved her hand, and her molecular control powers took hold of the bath and started to build it outwards, careful to reinforce the floor and add additional water. She needed to deconstruct a good chunk of the toilet and the sink to fit the tub – but when she was done, there was enough room for her to pick up and gently place Barbs on a carved edge of the tub that served as a kind of under-water seat. Barbs used her arms to brace herself, hissing and then settling as the warm water bouyed her up.

“Getting out of this is gonna be a bitch,” Barbs murmured, closing her eyes. “Eh, fuck it, I can just use my robot bodies to pick me up.”

“Or my telekinesis,” Kori said.

“Or my sister’s telekinesis, yes,” Barbs murmured, leaning against Kori’s shoulder, her hand caressing Kori’s belly under the water. She grinned, wickedly. “Or you could use your amazing molecular powers to repair my spine.”

“I- oh, uh,” Kori blinked, jerking upright, her eyes widening as she realized that.

Barbs cackled, then shoved herself away from Kori, hooking one arm over the tub as she slipped half off the underwater seat. “Kori, baby,” she said, playfully. “The complex and interweaving nature of disability and superheroes is something smarter people than you have written entire books on – and they’re still hammering it out.”

“Uh...” Kori blinked.

“So, firstly.” Barbs lifted her free hand, flicking her fingers up. “One? Am I actually disabled, considering I remote control robotic bodies with superhuman abilities using a cybernetic nerve-link in the nape of my neck. That’s something I think each disabled person will have to judge for themselves. I do think I’m disabled, because ... disability is a spectrum, ya know?” She shrugged her shoulders. “There’s someone out there who probably has an easier time than I do, and there are people out there who are way worse, and we’re all not quite abled, now are we? Two!” She flicked up another finger. “I’m not just a disabled woman, I am a superhero. I am in comic books, and probably a few cartoons soon. In those cartoons, a fictionalized version of my real identity is disabled too – people are out there with disability who read my stories. And...”

She flicked up her third finger. “Three! Not everyone can be fixed as easily as my spinal issue.”

“I can manipulate all observable matter and energy,” Kori said, her ears pinning back against her head as she crossed her arms over her chest.

Barbs snorted. “Can you break curses? What if someone is allergic to omni-spark energies? What if the disability is a quantum superposition which, when broken, leads to death? You can’t cover every single possible outcome, no matter how hard you try. And, like, say you get a great cursebreaker. Not every crusebreaker can break every curse, not every curse should be broken because life’s complicated and shitty.” She sighed. “On and on and on, the practical end point is: There are disabled people, and those people deserve heroes.”

Kori frowned at her. “Isn’t that a little ... I dunno...” She hesitated. “Patronizing?”

Barbs scowled at her sister, then lowered her hand with a splash. “Better than lying to them, I think, and pretending to be disabled when I’m not? Or what if I did just heal myself, like, ooh, hey, that girl you loved because she’s just like you, well, she gets to walk, and you’re still you.” She shook her head. “Besides, wheelchairs have tons of advantages. Imagine trying to build all the gizmos and gadgets I have into girl pants. Girl pants don’t even have pockets.”

Kori snorted. “You know what I think?” she asked.

“Well, I came here to seduce you into some sibling incest, but now I am curious,” Barbs said, her scowl growing a bit playful.

Kori opened her mouth, then closed it. She blushed.

“W-Well!” she said.

“No, go on,” Barbs said, nodding.

“Uh...” Kori coughed, rubbing her hand against her throat. “That was deliberate sabotage. You’re deliberately sabotaging this!” She pointed her finger at her sister, accusatory. “Because I think part of you is worried that you’ll slip back under the DT if you’re not constantly pushing yourself to overcome your disability. It defines you as much as my powers of the omni-spark define me.”

Barbs blushed. She was caught in the same loop of opening and closing her mouth – but unlike Barbs, she was in that look for several turns, her eyes widening, then narrowing. It was as if she was playing through dozens of possible answers, responses, rejections, interjections, counterpoints and asides, all in her head.

Then, deflating, she whispered. “Fuck. Maybe.” She lifted her hands in a shrug. “Like, when-” Her butt slipped off the seat she was perched on and she dropped into the deeper part of the tub with a blurble and a splash. Kori sat up nervously, but Barbs managed to get herself up and above water by pushing with her hands, shaking her head and spluttering. “ ... when I think about anything, it’s all stuff I have to already think. So.” She blushed. “I’m really good at coming up with excuses for everything I feel, you know?”

“GIGO,” Kori said, solemnly.

Barbs snorted. “When half the stuff going into me is my brother’s cum, I wouldn’t use that term that often.”

Kori snorted and put her hands over her mouth to stop herself from laughing hysterically.

A soft knock came from the door.

“Come in!” Barbs said before Kori could stop her. The door opened and in leaned Rachel, in her civilian form. She saw Kori and Barbs, then grinned and snapped her fingers. Seconds later, Corvi Magpie was teleporting into the bath to the other side of Kori. Her gray arm snaked around Kori’s shoulder and she grinned at her.

“Hey sis,” she said. “I bet you’re feeling the post Event crash – I came here to talk to you about it.”

“ ... oh my god, you’re stealing my bit...” Barbs whispered.

Corvi beamed at her beatifically, while Kori shook her head, then slid her arms around both of her sisters and drew them in close. Her brow furrowed as she adjusted the bath – water sloshing and slurping around as it became just wide enough for the three of them and long enough that they could stretch their legs out. This did end up having to adjust the size of the bathroom and caused a muffled noise on the other side of one of the walls. Dad’s voice came through.

“Are you using powers in the bath?”

“Yes,” Kori said, wincing. “Are you okay?”

“Just change the wall slower next time, I nearly got my antlers bonked off.” Dad chuckled.

“Tell him to get in here,” Corvi whispered, giggling.

“No!” Kori hissed back, then giggled as well. She snuggled into her sisters, her eyes half closing. “First, we have to finish this dang conversation.” She paused. “How the fuck do I go back to stopping bank robbers and ... and ... fighting heels after all this?”

Corvi nodded. “I had to make the same kind of adjustment after my Dark Corvi arc.” She hesitated, then pushed herself away from her sister, moving around so that she was in the middle of the bath, her knees resting on the sleek tub’s bottom, her breasts heaving as she drew in a sharp breath. “W-We ... all kinda joke around about it. But to be honest? Being corrupted by an evil ring was ... scary. I’m really lucky that I didn’t hurt anyone – I’m even more lucky that it was mostly kept in family, so, like.” She waved around with her hand. “It only took me a few months to get people’s trust back. But after it was done, I had to ... find my own equilibrium.” She shrugged. “Weirdly, I did that by just ... going on patrol and getting into fights.”

“ ... really?” Kori asked.

“Yup!” Corvi said. “I asked for some gangs who wanted to get their cache up by getting their butts kicked by a real sorcerer supreme, and a bunch of them decided to rob banks and hold up liquor stores that night.” She sighed. “The adrenaline hit really settled my feelings.”

“That sounds stupendously unhealthy,” Kori said, shaking her head, while Barbs frowned at Corvi.

“So, you’re the one who got all the gangs that Mom managed to get to retire back onto the street!” she said.

“Only for a week,” Corvi said, then laid back down in the water beside her sister, nuzzling against Kori’s shoulder. She hesitated. “You could fuck that bitch Melissa, I guess. That might also help, boys like sex with total cows.”

“You said you’d drop that!” Kori said, scowling at her sister, while Barbs snorted.

“The world almost ended, I can be a little petty,” Corvi grumbled.

Kori shook her head.

A knock came at the door.

“Uh-” Kori started, but his sisters called out immediately.

“Come on!” Their voices chorused over one another.

Mom stepped in. She was, of course, wearing not her costume but instead a loose, comfortable looking bathrobe and slippers that looked like cute baby elephants. Somehow, despite being in a loose, comfortable looking bathrobe and baby elephant slippers (cuteness included), she still managed to be the most stupendously fuckable MILF in the entire back half of the milkyway. Her eyes widened as she saw not just the change to the pool but, also, the girls piled up in it. Her surprise turned to gentle, maternal amusement in moments.

“I came here to talk to you, B ... er ... Kori,” she said, a small nametag fluttering down from the ceiling light to land in her hand seconds before she spoke. Kori boggled, trying to imagine the exact string of causality that had led her nametag ending up there. “But, uh, it looks like your sisters are already helping...” She bit her lip as, subtly, Corvi’s hand swept along Kori’s belly, teasing her slowly as Barbs pushed herself with one hand to snuggle in even closer against Kori’s other side. Barbs’ left hand, hidden by the water, stroked along Kori’s thighs, leaving Kori feeling almost lightheaded.

“I-If it’s about how to recover from an Event, t-the, uh, advice I got so far is to throw myself into fights, routine, and sex,” Kori said.

“Oh, no, no, no, no!” Mom said, shaking her head. “Honey, do you remember what I had you do after the Dark Corvi arc?”

“You ... had me do things?” Corvi asked.

Mom smiled. “I used my subtle momly wiles to get you out of the house and visiting your baseline friends.” She shook her head. “Kori, the way you get centered again is to be normal for a bit.” She grinned. “After this bath, go hang out with L’oquan and play some ... Half Halo, or ... Four Night or whatever.”

“Halo, Half Life, Fortnite,” Kori said, giggling softly.

“Exactly!” Mom said, nodding. “Then, once you have refilled your normal tank, go and fight one of your Heels and get your back blown out by a hunky minotaur.” She smiled, warmly. “That’ll set you up right and proper.”

Kori considered all the advice she had been given and, had to admit, Mom’s advice was definitely the best.

Kori rang the doorbell of her best friend’s house and L’oquan opened it and Kori realized, with a lurch, that Mom’s advice had been bad, stupid, terrible, awful, the worst advice in the universe. Why? Well, it was simple. It was blatantly, obviously, stupidly simple.

1) Kori was currently in her girl form and had forgotten to re-boy before teleporting onto her bike and peddling her way to L’oquan’s house.

2) L’oquan had no idea that Bryant/Kori’s egg had cracked like it had been thrown into an automated egg cracking machine by one Jinxwitch, LLC.

3) When Kori was in girl form she was flooded with all the hormones and sensations of being a girl and, unfortunately, Kori DeWitt’s brain when it was in girl mode ... was a boy liker.

“ ... hey!” L’oquan said, sounding faintly confused. He was a Triellian, meaning he had two arms – one on the left shoulder, one on the right – and a central third arm that emerged from his chest. He had a kind of long, narrow snout, with sharp teeth and a very, very, very long tongue and oh god, Kori couldn’t stop thinking about the time she, er, he, at the time, he had at the time seen L’oquan wrap that entire tongue around an entire hotdog and eat the whole thing in a single slurp that tongue was easily two feet long and flexible enough to tie cherries into knots. But also, L’oquan had the upper body strength of a green Triellian, which meant he was ... uh. Wow. He was buff. His arms were buff. And he had those digitigrade legs and ... uh...

Kori stood there, her entire face turning beat red.

“D-Do I know you?” L’oquan asked.

“H-Heyyyyy!” Kori said. “Uh. Heha. Aha. Uh. Hi!”

“Hello?” L’oquan cocked his head.

“Unm. Ahem. Uh.” Kori coughed. “W-Woaw. Uh.”

“Are you okay?” L’oquan asked. “You, uh. You seem to be having a bit of trouble there?”

“Hi!” Kori held out her hand. “It’s me! Kori! That is, um. Bryant. That is, I’m ... I’m genderqueer and, uh, I was gonna tell you but then there was an apocalypse, then it got canceled, and-”

“Whoa!” L’oquan’s three eyes widened. “You’re a hot girl now?”

“Y-Yeah, I- wait, I thought you said you didn’t find human girls attractive!” Kori said, flushing.
