Later, much later, Melissa would be at a dinner party and finally get around to asking Bryant why, oh why, did he turn from his baseline, normal form, and into Nova Nine the moment that he realized she was Inferness.

At the time?

It was pure instinct. An immediate reaction – and a pretty silly one. Thought about logically, later, there was no way that knowing that Inferness was Melissa would reveal that Bryant was Nova Nine. But it seemed an obvious, foregone conclusion, in the two seconds it took for him to transform.

The funny thing was that Inferness was barely shocked. Without a single hesitation, they both sprang into motion, flowing like a well oiled team, like two partners who had fought side by side a hundred times. Within a single second, Nova had turned oxygen into silken ropes and Inferness had wrenched Jinxwitch’s arms behind her back, and the whole girl had been trussed up into a bondage rig that made her look a bit like an eminently fuckable Thanksgiving turkey. Jinx, her eyes wide and shocked, squeaked as she fell onto her side, her popcorn scattering onto the floor.

Because, at the end of the day, both of them knew in that moment the most important thing in the world was to keep Jinxwitch away from her phone.

And twitter.

“Homophobia! Betrayal!” She exclaimed as Inferness grabbed her, lifted her up, then planted her down on the very chair she had been using to interrogate Nova on, while Nova snapped his fingers, his powers working quickly to slam shutters down over every window in the loft apartment – even the windows without shutters manifested them in a haze of blue light before the metal clanked down. Within seconds, the entire place was denuded of outside light. A brilliant lamp turned on, shining down at Jinx as Nova and Inferness crossed their arms over their chests.

“All right, Jinx,” Inferness said. “Lets talk.”

“You are Melissa Sok! You are Melissa Sok!” Jinx sang out. “And he’s Brandon DeWitt!”

“Bryant,” Nova said, without thinking. “Fuck!”

“Aahaha!” Jinx cackled, wriggling on the stool.

“She goes to our school, she has too,” Inferness growled, her flaming eye spitting sparks as she glared at Jinx.

“Oh wowwww, how are you ever going to narrow it down! I mean, CCHS has, what, two thousand students?” Jinx said, smirking. “I mean, sure, you could make it easier by just picking the cuties. But, for all you know when I’m not gray and pink, I’m a big old tubby ... fuckin’ ... teacher. Or something. Did you ever think I was a forty year old ugly fucker who bangs your girlfriend in the naughty mangas?”

She pronounced it man-gahs. Nova was fairly sure did so maliciously.

“Fuck!” Inferness snarled, then turned to Nova. “We have to do something, we cannot have a supervillain know our fucking secret identities.”

“Yeah, yeah, about that,” Nova said, his voice tight. “Melissa ... you’re a goddamn succubus?”

“Oh, you’re one to talk, Mr. Fucked The Luck Witch!” Inferness snapped back.

“I ... did I tell you that or did she?” Nova asked, hesitantly.

“Oh like she didn’t immediately brag about nailing the new Impossible!” Inferness shot back, her flame-spitting eye hissing with sparks.

“He was soooooo gooooood toooooo!” Jinx purred, somehow forming her lips into a:3 again despite being in a shibari knot combination. “And he said I was tighter and better than his girlfriend too, now I think about it.”

“I di ... did I?” Nova asked.

“Oh my god,” Inferness put her hand over her face.

“Hey, you cheated on me with my Dad!” Nova shot back.

“I mean, with your fake comic book Dad!” Inferness said, her cheeks burning.

Nova felt his stomach drop.

Fuck.

Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck.

“Oh my godddd!” Jinx squealed. “Mr. DeWitt is The King of the Forest, ahaha!” She cackled and kicked her legs. “That means that Mrs. DeWitt is Lady Luck, and Barbs is ... let me guess, Corvi?”

“How would she be Corvi, she’s in a fucking wheelchair!” Inferness snapped, sounding as harried as Nova was, her hands going to either side of her head.

“She gets up and transforms, obviously,” Jinx said, rolling her eyes. “Next you’re gonna ask me how Lacy Hunt can be Legacy II.”

Both teens stopped and blinked at Jinx.

“Kidding! God, I’m kidding!” Jinx said, a bit too fast. “I mean, Lacy Hunt wears glasses, Legacy II-”

“We have to wipe her memory,” Inferness said. “Then our memories. Then, we need to pretend this never happened, which will be really easy because our memories won’t exist, agreed?”

“I-I ... no ... bu-” Nova stammered. “We can’t wipe her memories without her consent!”

“Why not?” Inferness asked. “Right, shit. Hero.”

The conversation had been going so fast for so long that Nova felt like he was on a train without brakes. But he wasn’t. He was in a conversation with his girlfriend. And there were things. That he. Wanted. To. Talk. About. It was funny, now that he was actually standing in the same room as Melissa, with every barrier and every constraint ripped away, he had way more things to talk about than he even thought he had.

“Stop. Before we talk about anything else ... I kinda want to talk about the whole supervillain thing, Melissa,” Nova said, blushing, his ears pinning against his head. His stomach felt like it was bubbling.

“What? You want me to defend my actions?” Inferness snapped, angrily.

Jinx, her expression still smug, flicked her eyes back and forth between them as the conversation lobbed sentences back and forth, like rapid fire antimatter mortar barrages.

“Kinda!” More anger now. “Like, for example, you’ve killed multiple people?”

“Oh you do not go there,” Melissa hissed.

“I dunno, Melissa! It’s one thing to hear Inferness mention a tragic backstory, it’s another thing for you to say, basically out loud, that you fucked several people to death with your succubus pussy!” Nova said. “Which, I mean, it almost feels insulting to say this at all, but ... murder? It’s bad!”

“Ohhhh wowwww!” Melissa put her hands on her cheeks. “Murder is bad?”

Jinx was practically vibrating as she watched Melissa get into Bryant’s face. She grabbed onto his domino mask and yanked it down.

“I. Was. Sixteen.” She hissed. “When some scumfuck demon bastard tricked me into signing a contract that turned me into this. And when, after a week of agonizing pain, I realized that I couldn’t go fucking cold turkey and refuse the call, I finally tracked down a guy with enough swastika tattoos and Zabatwan Front and Mutant Fragger merch to seem like a good choice for my stupid fucking contract, I had to fucking let him touch me. Did you think I wanted to lose my virginity to a smelly fat fuck who kept calling me a...” She cut herself off. “A-And he didn’t even go to fucking Hell! He just died.”

Bryant stood very still.

“But no, no, no, tell me about how murder is fucking bad!” Melissa turned her back on him, her tail lashing back and forth.

“I ... fine ... but...” Bryant stammered. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Tell you!?” Melissa spun around, her one good eye glinting with tears. “Tell the one fucking boy I’ve ever met in my life who didn’t see me as a sex object that, oh, actually, every weekend for the past two years, I rob banks to try and pay off my demonic sugar daddy? That I get so ... so... fucking horny I can’t even think straight, and then I turn normal again! Do you know what it feels like when succubi lust hormones hit an eighteen year old’s endocrine system? Oh! I know, I’ll risk letting my fundi family find out that I’m mostly devil, so they can kick me out of the fucking house and disown me!”

“Do you really think I’d give a damn that you were a succubus?” Bryant asked, grabbing her hand. “If you had just been honest with me-”

“Like you were honest with me?” Melissa yanked her hand back. “Like, glass fucking houses, Bry. Which I can also say about the whole cheating thing.”

“After I cheated on you with you,” Bryant said, feeling stung – he felt like a squirming worm. “Which is after you cheated on me with my own actual Dad!”

“Well, I didn’t know he was your Dad at the time!” Melissa shouted back. “And you know what? He won’t fucking brag to my parents that he was nailing me, because supers actually keep things among other capes – and I don’t care if half the cape community thinks I’m free use! And my...” She made a face, then waved her hand – as if she didn’t even want to talk about her friends.

“But you’re not free use, you’re my girlfriend! I love you, or ... I did!” Bry shot back.

Silence.

Jinx, who had been looking back and forth between them, remained very silent. Even her amusement looked like it had dimmed down.

Melissa didn’t look at him. She rubbed her shoulders. “I ... I am sorry.” She looked at her feet, kicking one. “I ... fuck.” She sagged, then sat onto the bed. Her head hung forward, and the flames that flickered from her missing eye dimmed to a thin flicker. “It’s all just excuses anyway. All me trying to turn this around into something bad you did when I dug every fucking inch myself. I signed the fucking contract. I didn’t ask for help, and ... by the time I thought I could ... it was too late.” She closed her eyes. “If people learn that I killed that guy, like, permanently killed him?”

She didn’t have to go on.

“And ... and now ... now I don’t even have you,” she whispered, between the tears, which were streaming and hissing down her face.

Bryant slowly walked over, then sat down on the bed next to her. His arm slid around his girlfriend’s broad shoulders. He drew her in gently, and she leaned against him. Softly, he said: “I ... I still do love you. I think?”

“You think?” Melissa lifted her head.

“I don’t know. It’s. It’s fucking complicated.” Bryant said. His head lifted and he glowered at Jinx. “Also, not all of it has to be said with this pink haired menace listening.”

“Hey, I was having fun before she made it all real,” Jinx said, frowning at Melissa. Then, quietly. “Sorry, Ness. That’s a real shitty hoe to row, ya know?”

Melissa lifted her hand and flipped Jinx off, which made the slender luck witch smile wryly. Bry shook his head.

“It’s just, you’re perfect,” Melissa said, drawing back and sniffing hard. “And I fucked it up.”

“Well, I...” Bryant hesitated, his stomach flipping over as he remembered the very, very, very, very bad stuff he had, in fact, done. To his sister. His other sister. His mom. His sister again. All things that were decidedly not perfect. At all. In the slightest.

“ ... what was that?” Melissa asked around her stuffy sounding nose, her eyes crinkling as her tears slowed.

“What was what?” Bryant asked.

“Oooooooh he did some thing baaaaaaad and seeeeeeeeexy!” Jinx squealed, waggling her eyebrows fiercely and bouncing in her restraints, her excitement immediately returning now that she smelled blood.

“We have to wipe everyone’s memories,” Bryant said, firmly, holding up his hands.

“No, no, no, wait, wait, what is it that made you feel so guilty?” Melissa asked.

“It’s nothing,” Bryant said, too fast, without thinking. He immediately kicked himself. Hard.

“No, it was definitely something,” Melissa said, her voice gaining in strength. “I cheated on you, you cheated on me, we’ve both fucked Jinx. I’ve told you my entire tragic backstory, man!”

“When did you fuck Jinx?” Bryant asked, momentarily thrown.

“She was robbing a Victoria’s Secret to get new panties after someone teleported hers into orbit and I was walking by to get home from my day job and, um ... we ended up tribbing in the back rooms while hiding from the cops,” Melissa said, blushing.

“Your girlfriend’s a real good lesbian, by the way,” Jinx purred. “Facts for future reference. And she came harder with me than she ever has with you.”

“That’s not true!” Melissa said, while Bryant rolled his eyes.

“I mean, who’d know but me?” Jinx asked.

“I would, I’ve fucked him, remember?” Melissa snapped. “ ... a-anyway, what was it you’re guilty about? I’ve told you everything!” She sounded like she was not going to budge, even slightly.

Bryant frowned, grabbing onto his domino mask and slipping it back on. As Nova, he crossed his arms over his chest, his cheeks burning. “Are we going to wipe our memories after this?” he asked. “If so, I’ll tell everything.”

“Yes,” Inferness said, her own voice shifting subtly as she also slipped into her persona.

“Nupe!” Jinx giggled and looked as sweet and pettable as a kitten. “I do not consent. You’re gonna have to break your solemn oath to respect the sanctity of the human mind ... really ... deconstruct yourself there, Bryant, to save yourself from me knowing exactly who you are. What would you do to keep that secret? Would you rob? Steal?” Her eyes glittered wickedly. “Kill?”

Nova remained silent. He could tell that Jinx was yanking his chain – she didn’t have a murderous bone in her body. But rising to the bait was obviously a bad idea ... and now that he had had a moment to think, he realized something. His eyes flicked to Inferness’ eyes (well, eye) and caught it. She saw something in his gaze and grinned, giving him the subtlest of nods as she wiped some of the snot off her nose. She was going to follow his lead. After being rubbed raw by all the intense, emotional conversations, being able to have her follow his lead felt like a balm. Nova forced his smile away and, instead, sighed dramatically.

“Fine,” he said.

“Hah!” Jinx smirked. “First order, untie me, or I will tellll everyone!”

“Sure, sure,” Nova said, walking around behind her back. “And, uh, you have a lawyer picked out, right?”

“Yeah, I- what?” Jinx froze as Nova put his hands on her restraints. He started to tug at the ties around her wrists.

“Well, yeah, secret identities are protected by law,” Nova said. “It’s to provide legal recourse from exactly this kind of thing. Now, I’m not a lawyer, I think the primary way that you can get around being sued for this is to prove that you didn’t use mundane infiltration nor paranatural or metahuman powers to access the information – in short, that you were given the information freely, uncoerced. That way, like, the law doesn’t come down on ex-spouses who happen to know a meta’s secret ID, right?”

“I ... yeah, but, I did!” Jinx exclaimed. “You told me, like, while I was in the room! It was your fuck up!” She looked smug. “Airtight. Bulletproof.”

“It is,” Inferness said, catching onto the thread. She smirked, leaning forward. “And you know what? I bet you can prove it.”

“Hah!” Jinx grinned.

“After, of course, the depositions,” Inferness murmured.

“And the filing of the lawsuit,” Nova said, over Jinx’s head to Inferness.

“Oh, wait, no, we’re forgetting the pre-trial!” Inferness said. “First, we gotta do the pre-trial discussions, then the court goes into interrogations, depositions, subpoenas...”

“And once the trial is over, we’ll have the appeals!” Nova said. “Week. Upon Week. Of appeals. You’re gonna have to go to court again and again and again and talk to the lawyers over and over, and there’s paperwork, good god, the paperwork-”

Jinx groaned, rolling her head back. “I get it! I get it!”

She slumped in her seat, pouting. Hard.

“You guys are no fun,” she said. “Don’t fight fair.”

“I’m a supervillain,” Inferness said, smirking and kneeling down, so she could look Jinx in the eyes. “Of course I don’t fight fair.”

Jinx sighed. “Well, at least now Nova has no reason to not tell us immediately what is somehow more guilt-wracking and nerve inducing than sleeping with your boyfriend’s Dad behind his back, or literal actual manslaughter!” She paused. “Also, he has to amuse me at least once before I let him diddle my brains.”

Nova weighed his options. Keeping Jinx sweet about now did seem to require certain sacrifices. He nodded. “Very well, I will amuse you. But it cannot take anything beyond this room – no sending me off to rob banks or ruin my reputation!”

“But you can’t say no no matter what it is within this room!” Jinx shot back.

“Deal,” Nova said, then turned the ropes binding her into air with a haze of twinkling blue sparkles. Jinx sprang to her feet and twirled, her arms spreading wide.

“Ah, freedom!” she said. “Before you amuse me, spill! Spill! Spill! Spill!”

She started to chant the words, while Inferness grinned, then started to chant as well.

“Spill! Spill! Spill!”

Nova sighed, then lifted his hands. “Okay, wait. Wait. Wait.” He paused. “I don’t want to wipe our memories.”

“Dughawhaaa!?” Jinx spluttered.

“Okay, I want to wipe your memories,” Nova said. “But ... but Melissa and I, we’ve been running in circles with the cheating and the sleeping around behind one another’s backs all the time, I want to get it fucking done with and deal with it as adults! I don’t want to just reset things!” He blushed, hard, while Jinx rolled her eyes.

“Fucking goddamn it, man, you are a cosmic hero! Wipe our memories, but implant fake ones where you and M-dawg talked about your stupid swinger super bullshit and then bing bang boom’s your uncle, you’re good to go. Like. Goddamn, you can do fucking anything with your stupid bullshit, do it!” Jinx sounded downright annoyed.

Nova opened his mouth, then closed it. Memories were just structures in the brain and energy patterns in quantum consciousness. He could manipulate them. Inferness rubbed her shoulders, looking unsure. “So, what is the exact ... uh, outcome we’re going to make here?”

“I dunno, I’m not fuckin’ your dad,” Jinx said.

“That I know is a lie,” Nova shot back.

“ ... okay, fine, only thirteen times,” Jinx grumbled. “That’s restrained, considering how horny that guy is.”

“Antlery,” Inferness muttered under her breath.

“Whatever!”

Nova rubbed his jaw. “Melissa, how do you want our relationship to be? Like, yeah, I got kind of heated back there. But, like. Ignore what I want, and just say what you want from life. Then I’ll say what I want, and we’ll see if ... if we want the same thing.” He blushed, hard. What if they didn’t want the same thing?

Well. Then we don’t, he thought. And that’s that.

There were worse things in the world than that, right? Well, why did his stomach start doing flip flops?

Jinx muttered under her breath. “He still hasn’t told us the juice.”

Inferness ignored her. Instead, she looked lost. “I ... I don’t know,” she said. “I’ve been running on adrenaline and hormones so long I don’t even know what I want my major to be once I go to college. I love you. I want you to be happy.” She blushed. “But can we get married? Have kids? I mean, your Mom and Dad had kids before they became supers. But, like, some supers have had kids while being super, right?”

Nova nodded.

“But, also, my curse is kind of short circuited right now, but I’m still in thrall to Hell to do shit for them,” Inferness said. “And I don’t want to go back to being a baseline.” She blushed. “I ... I like being this. I like being strong and powerful. I like ... I like it...” She trailed off. “Is that so wrong? Is it wrong to ... to want to be more than normal?”

“I don’t think so,” Nova said, smiling at her. “But you were never normal, Melissa.”

“Yeah cause she had the proportions of a stick bug,” Jinx said, giggling.

Nova gently bapped the top of her head. “Shush you.”

“Homophobia!” Jinx whined, as if he had just hit her with a hammer. “Brutality, police brutality.”

Inferness ignored her. “But, like, if I was just going to go off what my gut wants? What I want is ... um...” She blushed. “Okay. Don’t get mad. Promise to not get mad.”

“Promise,” Nova said.

“ ... I kinda want to keep cheating on you?” Inferness whispered. “It’s really hot. Like. It’s wrong, and you don’t actually get hurt by it, since you don’t know it, and ... like ... it’s really hot.” She blushed hard. “S-Sorry. Like, I don’t want to actually actually cheat on you, but, like, I can’t say it wasn’t hot. Does that make sense?”

Nova chuckled. “I’d be kind of a hypocrite if I got mad about that. Since, well. Fucking Jinx behind your back was. Uh. Wow.”

“Hehe, I’m hotter than you,” Jinx purred at Inferness.

Inferness bopped the top of her head, even more gently than Nova.

“Mewww!”

Nova continued: “Do you want to fuck me in your supervillain form too?”

Inferness nodded. “Behind my own back? Yeah.”

“Do you want us to fuck in our normal forms?” Nova asked.

“ ... yeah...” Inferness bit her lip. “We both have a secret, and we both are keeping secrets – and we’re keeping doubly secret from my shitty parents. That’s really hot.” She licked her lips slowly.

“Okay!” Nova said.

“Now, what do you want?” Jinx asked. “Other than brutalizing innocent teenage luck witches?”

Nova sighed. “I want to protect the world from Darkthornn, firstly.”

Jinx choked. “Fuckin’ what!?”

Nova and Inferness both looked at her.

“You didn’t know?” Inferness asked.
