“How was sleeping it rough, dirty boy?” Crystal asked the next morning as a breakfast of rabbit was being prepared.

It had been great last night, but this morning it was less appetizing. But we had to make do.

“My back hurts,” I admitted. I had never gone camping.

“That’s what you get for not taking us all with you,” Maya said, a playful tone to her sending.

“I’d still be sleeping on the ground,” he muttered telepathically. He stretched his back, trying to get it to pop. “Well, once we’re done with breakfast, we should be there in two or so hours.”

“Have fun,” Maya said. “And you could have slept on me. I would have been your water bed.” Her laughter echoed through his mind.

“Should have brought the oozes,” I muttered. “They would have been comfortable to sleep on.”

“It wasn’t that bad,” said Halia. “I’ve had worse nights.” She was back in her armor, Stormlight on her side. She might have to use it soon. Hopefully, this new dungeon builder would see reason.

But he had killed ... Should I just wipe him out? Innocent people were dead. Didn’t he deserve to be punished? What was better for the world? Showing them that rogue dungeon builders are punished or recruiting another to serve me. Siwang and Munjan were working out great. Munjan showed a lot of promise.

It was something I mulled over as we ate our breakfast of rabbit. Then we were on our way. More walking. And I’d have to walk back. I almost cast Strength of Earth to make it easier on myself, but Kassie didn’t have that. The halfling mage also didn’t complain.

So I wouldn’t, either.

We soon reached the area I had seen from the air. Garnet and Mrs. Lucina were flying above us, scouting. The red caps were drawn tight around Halia, Kassie, and Me, with Terra ready to bash in any monster girls that attacked us.

“I found it, big bro!” Garnet shouted in my mind. “Do you see me? I can see you! I’m off to your right! I’m right above it!”

I glanced at her waving as she hovered in the air, her wings flapping. Then she blew me kisses.

“I see you,” I said. “Rudsa, that way! To Garnet.”

The red cap at the lead of the column nodded, her sword out. She flicked her gaze around at the brush, quivering. They all were spoiling for the fight. That was such an interesting phrase. Spoiling. Why that word? It was a word that had so many different meanings. You could spoil something and ruin it, like letting it rot or telling the twist ending of a movie. Spoils could be looted during war.

I was nervous if I was worrying about that.

We moved through the brush and found a game trail that led us up the hill to the opening of the cave. Garnet and Mrs. Lucina landed as I stared at it. I stepped over it and could feel that I had entered into another’s place of power.

I concentrated and sent, “Hi, I’m Leo, another Dungeon Builder, and I’m just here to talk with your lord,” I said to the Soul of the Void Crystal. “Tell him I’m not here to do him any harm. I just want to talk.”

“Another dungeon builder, huh?” a man’s voice spoke in my mind. “So there’s more of us.”

“Lots more,” I told him. “And you’ve attacked into territory I protect. So we need to talk. Will you meet with me?”

There was a pause. “Sure. Why not.”

I didn’t like the flippancy of this dungeon builder. There was something definitely off about him, but... “I swear by my Void Crystal that I, Leo Baldwin, and my vassals, Garnet, Terra, Bella Lucina, Kassie, and Halia, shall not harm you or yours. I ask leave to enter your dungeon and be granted safe passage to your presence.”

There was another long pause. What would his answer be? I was in his dungeon and didn’t have his protection. What if he tried to sneak attack me? If he was sending his monster girls to the entrance to ambush me. He couldn’t teleport them because I was in his dungeon.

I didn’t have any defensive spells up. My heart pounded as a bead of sweat ran down my brow. Then, finally, he answered, “I swear by my Void Crystal that you shall have safe passage to me and be allowed to leave unmolested so long as you do nothing to threaten or harm myself or my vassals.”

“Okay,” I said “Rudsa, we’re going in. Form up here. He’s willing to talk, but he might not agree to be a vassal. He doesn’t sound ... cooperative.”

“Excellent,” she said. “We’ll be ready to storm his dungeon, my lord.”

“Don’t forget to pay attention to his dungeon layout,” added Vardarbiba.

“Yes, yes, if we know the layout and location of traps, this will be much easier,” Vacinsa said, a big grin on her face. “If you and your ladies would do that, my Lord.”

I nodded.

I entered the dungeon with my women. Terra took the lead, marching ahead of us with Halia at her side. Garnet and Kassie flanked me with Mrs. Lucina at the rear. We didn’t get far into the cave when a slender and tall woman with small breasts and wild, white hair appeared out of a crack in the cave. She had bluish skin that stood out against the dark stone behind her.

“This way,” she said and grinned at me. She had sharp teeth and a gleam of hunger in her eyes. Her skin looked as hard as diamond. “Follow.”

“She’s a wendigo,” I sent to the women with us. “So he has the Ice glyph.”

I hadn’t made any wendigos yet. Maybe it’s because I had played Until Dawn and knew what they were in our world. Cannibals.

This one moved with an animal’s gait. She almost loped ahead of us like she was on the hunt, leading us into the dungeon proper. The stones were made of pale white instead of the usual gray and the air held a chilly bite.

If we weren’t guests, we’d feel the effect of the cold permeating the stones. I didn’t see any traps as the wendigo led us on, bounding from one foot to the next. We didn’t have to worry about traps on the way in and out, but I had a bad feeling.

The wendigo paused when she realized she was moving faster than us. She crouched like a waiting feline. If she had a tail, I imagined it would be swishing. She licked her lips as she stared at us. I had the distinct feeling she wanted to eat us.

Were those villagers killed by accident?

When we caught up, she loped off again. Her feral movements unnerved me. I wished I had my spear in hand. I knew we were safe. He had sworn the oath. He couldn’t harm us until we left. I didn’t like the prospect of having to fight our way into here.

I should have brought more monster girls. I was being arrogant. I didn’t want to frighten the builder with a show of overwhelming force. I wanted to recruit him. He was so close to me, there was no point in not recruiting him.

But I should start unleashing my adventurers mixed with monster girls to hit small dungeon builders. I needed the power to reach the shrines. But Siwang and Munjan were both reasonable. Why not this one?

“She seems way wilder than any of your wendigos,” Mrs. Lucina noted. “I mean, if you made them. I couldn’t imagine they would act like this.”

“Dungeon builders are different,” I answered, trying not to feed my own misgivings.

“This isn’t going to work,” Halia said. “That wendigo is a killer. She’s tasted blood, and she wants more.”

“We have to try,” I said. “But do as the red caps wanted. Memorize our route in and out, look for traps, and anything else we’ll have to deal with on our attack.”

It was so depressing to think this way as we followed the wendigo through the labyrinth. She moved unerringly, taking the twists and turns with ease. She led us through the correct path. When she came to a metal door covered in frost, she opened it with ease.

I could tell it wouldn’t be so easy for us on the assault, but we’d have my magic.

Inside the room was a blizzard. Wind howled and snow fell heavily. It was a whiteout. You couldn’t see far at all. The wendigo didn’t just cut straight across the room. She moved to the right and left, leading us on a sinuous path through it.

Though it was all snow. I had a feeling there were hidden pitfalls or snowdrifts so deep you’d fall into them and be buried. She blazed a path through it we could easily follow, but the falling snow was quickly filling it up.

We went through another door into a hallway. A short one. She opened the door at the end and we entered the throne room. It was a large, circular room with the map on the floor, a throne of ice beyond it. Icicles hung from the ceiling. The stones in here were pale blue and covered in frost in places.

The dungeon builder sat on his throne in a fur coat and heavy, wool pants. He had embraced the ice lord motif. He had skin paler than mine and was muscular. Like he had been a bodybuilder. He was older than me, in his thirties, with a bald head and a thick, black mustache. Standing beside him was his companion. She was a snake woman like Paanee, only his one had her arms. Her skin was pale as snow, her scales ice-blue that matched the hair spilling down her back. She had large breasts and hypnotic eyes, blue and slitted like a serpent’s. She swayed beside him.

“Welcome to the domain of Zamrazen, Lord of Ice,” the woman hissed, her voice echoing through the room. “Be welcome.”

“She’s a lamia,” Halia said. “They have hypnotic gazes and can spit icy daggers.”

“Yes, welcome,” Zamrazen said, his voice as hard. “You wished to talk. You claim I’ve violated your territory.”

“Yes, you have,” I said. “But I understand you didn’t do it knowingly. How long have you been here? A week or two?”

“Something like that.” Zamrazen stared at me with hard eyes. “What do you want.”

I liked the directness of it. “An alliance,” I said. “I want you to become my vassal.”
