I do not know how much time had passed, but when I opened my eyes again, I was lying in Tyler’s bed, the sheets soft and cool against my overheated and still sweat-damp skin. He was sitting beside me on the bed holding a bottle of water. He was still naked; his body was covered in a drying sheen of sweat, and his hair was damp and mussed. His face wore that same cocky half-smile that I had used to think was arrogant and hated with a passion. I now found myself growing weak, causing my breath to hitch and sending butterflies racing through my stomach at the mere sight of it.
“Welcome back, you gorgeous sexy woman.”
I smiled up at him weakly, still dazed, and took the water bottle he offered me with slightly shaky hands. I closed my eyes and drank deeply while the last tremors of everything we had just done continued to echo through my body.
“Thank you,” I said, and the words came out softer than I expected, almost fragile. The rough, thin sound surprised me more than the dryness in my throat. I took another long swallow from the water bottle. The water was cold enough to make my teeth ache, and I let it settle the rawness while my eyes drifted over him again.
God, the marks! The angry red welt o n his chest where my teeth had sunk in was the first to draw my eye. The darker bruise higher on his shoulder, complete with the clear outline of my bite, was next. Long, thin red lines tracked across his arms and the hard planes of his torso, some of them still raised, the kind that would turn purple by morning. A couple of faint scratches even marked his cheek and jaw. I wondered, with a slow, clinical sort of curiosity, how bad I looked in comparison. My body already carried evidence from the night before; whatever new collection we’d added tonight was still hidden under the soft sheets and the heavy, pleasant ache that lived everywhere at once.
“What happened?” I asked, the question quiet. My free hand rested on the mattress between us, not quite touching him yet. “I mean ... after.”
Tyler’s half-smile softened a fraction, and he adjusted his position on the bed, but stayed basically where he was, half on the bed, half off, left foot on the floor, right leg bent, torso angled toward me close enough that I could feel the residual heat coming off his skin, not close enough to press against me.
“You went completely out,” he chuckled. “Just ... gone. So, I picked you up and carried you in here, got you settled, and went to grab some water for both of us. I figured you’d need it when you came back.” He paused, eyes moving over my face with something that looked almost like wonder. “Christ, Beth. What happened a little bit ago, I don’t even know how to describe it. That was the singular best sexual experience I’ve ever had. Nothing comes close. No woman even compares or exists in the same universe. You’re beyond amazing.”
He leaned down slowly, giving me time to pull away if I wanted. I didn’t. His mouth met mine in a soft, careful kiss, nothing like the frantic collision that had happened earlier that evening. The kiss was a gentle, light caress, bringing with it the faint taste of salt and sweat as his lips pressed to mine. His hand came up and cupped the side of my face, thumb brushing along my cheekbone, then gently sweeping a few damp strands of hair out of my eyes. He kissed my forehead the same way, tender, almost reverent, and stayed close enough that his breath warmed my skin when he spoke again.
“Everything about you, your face and the way you look at me when you’re close. Your body, Jesus, the way it moves, the way it takes me, the way it answers. Your mind, the way you talk when you’re not trying to hide anything back. Your personality, that spark that keeps flashing wherever we are together; even when you’re angry or exhausted, the fire in you burns through the fog. All these years of physically wanting you but not knowing you, you seemed so hollow and vain. Now that I know you, now that we have shared that experience, you’re the closest thing to perfection I’ve ever imagined. Each time we have been together has been better than the last. I did not think that was possible after the night of the party, but you surprised me, and last night was one earth-shattering night. I keep waiting for the part where it stops feeling like this and it just ... doesn’t come. And now this ... whatever the hell that was we just shared. I can’t even put it into words”
I drank more water while he talked, trying to read between the lines and absorb what he was saying. I found myself taking small, careful sips so I wouldn’t choke on the sudden thickness in my throat as the timbre in his voice began to change, and I could feel the passion in his words. My eyes kept moving, scanning his face, the marks on his chest and shoulder, the long red lines down his arms, back to his eyes. Every time he said something that felt too large, too absolute, frankly too insane, I made myself meet his gaze and search it. Looking for the crack, the practiced line, the thing that would prove he was saying what he thought I wanted to hear. The cynical part of me, the part that had spent years cataloging every fault and foul action this man took part in, was waving giant red flags in front of me, screaming that he couldn’t possibly mean any of this, that no one talked about another person this way unless they wanted something and/or were trying to manipulate them. The rest of me, perhaps at this time the stronger part of me, the part still humming and sore and stupidly heartfelt and soft, drank the words in like the water and wanted them to be true.
I took a quiet inventory of my own body without moving much. My throat felt scraped raw. My jaw ached in a deep, used way. Between my legs, everything was swollen and tender while a heavy, saturated throbbing pulsed in time with my heartbeat. My hips and the soft flesh of my inner thighs carried a deep, spreading soreness. My ass stung where his hands had landed. My scalp still tingled from the way he’d used my hair. Even my nipples felt hypersensitive every time I shifted. I cataloged it all the way someone might check a map after a storm- damage assessment, nothing more. Then my attention slid back to him.
Tyler laughed under his breath, the sound low and almost self-conscious. “You turned into something wild. Something feral. I honestly wasn’t sure if you were really fucking me or if you were trying to kill me with your vagina. ‘Death by pussy’ would certainly be a hell of a way to go.”
