[The author wishes point out that the American sailor who engages in conjugal acts while overseas, does not restrict his sexual activities to women who make their living as prostitutes. Of course, there are those sailors who want to ‘cut to the chase’ and forego all the social entanglements. Contrary to anecdotal beliefs, many U.S. Navy men (and women) are looking for the cultural aspects of the different countries or cultures they visit (Really!). They are constantly reminded by their Commanding Officers that they are ‘Goodwill Ambassadors’. These ‘cultured’ sailors attend local concerts, plays, social functions: such as dances, and fundraisers for worthy causes around the world. Some are even looking for their future spouses. So, they meet, and sometimes romance, a woman they find at a bar; or a dance; or the myriad social activities that are available at ports of call. Honestly, sailors are human, and not all are walking hardons (snicker).]
The reaction to the news of ETC Nolan and DS3 Franklin being father and son was almost anticlimactic. To be sure, each had to repeat the ‘official story’ many times, but no one thought it as anything other than coincidence. The news became ‘non-news’ within a few days, though Chief Mahoney rarely missed a chance to ‘needle’ Eddie about ‘what his kid did’, good or bad. Edward was a good tech, so it was purely giving a fellow chief good natured ‘shit’!
Once more at sea, it was time to participate in multi-ship evolutions used to hone the battle skills of the entire group. Eddie had paused momentarily to ponder how it was determined which of all the ships in the fleet would get the chance to go south. Was there a lottery? Or perhaps scoring high on battle exercises? Or was it merely navy cronyism? He didn’t know, nor care; he was just thrilled his ship had been chosen. It would be the icing on the cake of his naval career. His first hurdle, however, was going through the ‘initiation’!
Any U.S. Navy deployment to the South Pacific begins with going over the Equator. For centuries, sailors have observed the rights of passage associated with ‘crossing the line’ for the first time. Any sailor who hasn’t crossed the Equator is considered a ‘Polliwog’, or ‘wog’, by those ‘shellbacks’ who have crossed that imaginary dividing line between the northern and the southern hemisphere. Crossing over is the simplest part; it’s just sailing southward. To any sailor, the most important, or notorious part is the long-held tradition of the Shellback Initiation. Each ship and crew have their own variations, but the tradition is ancient, and the U.S. Navy honors such traditions. The author will not go into any detail, for fear of boring the prurient-minded reader. Suffice it to say, Eddie, along with two other chiefs who had never crossed the equator, participated and passed the Shellback initiation. There were also several other enlisted, including Edward Franklin, and one officer, who started the trip as ‘wogs’ and earned their Shellback certificate, which was made a part of their permanent service record.
[The author hates to leave you hanging, but Eddie got tired of talking, so we’re pausing while he takes a break. Please keep an eye out for the continuation of Eddie - First WestPac cruise. The title will be Eddie – 1st WestPac, Adventures below equator and letters from home.
