Jack said, “Uh ... Hello.”

“You may speak to me with your mind if you wish to be silent.”

Jack tried that, ‘Who are you? What are you? Are you ... the nanites?’

“You may call me Fidelis. It is the name my creator will give me approximately thirty-seven years from now. I am what you would call an artificial intelligence. Though I am much more advanced than the chatbots and art generators you find on your internet. No, I am not the nanites, exactly. I control the nanites and I exist because of the nanites, but I also exist on the subatomic level, in what your friend Matthew called, ‘subspace’--an apt description I suppose.”

Jack realized he could think his thoughts to Fidelis, but it sounded like he was actually hearing the words of Fidelis in his ears.

“You are hearing me in your ears. The nanites are aiding in our communication. They also made the message appear in your vision, not I.”

‘Fascinating,’ Jack thought.

“Should I continue to call you Jackson Richard Edwards, the fourth? Or would you prefer, Jack as your memories indicate you are usually called?”

‘Please call me Jack.’

“Of course. Jack, I contacted you because you gained access to--as I assume you suspect--one of the creators of the nanites.”

‘Polly and Jessica are both creators of the nanites?’ Jack asked.

“Yes. Or they will be.”

‘Okay. Why contact me?’

Fidelis responded, “To warn you. I monitor all usage of the MPC program that manipulates the subjects the nanites inhabit. I was programmed to monitor the nanites and intervene if anything were to jeopardize the objectives of Operation Crossroads. However, the original programmer of the Master PC program was able to discover the nanites override code. It is programmed into every known version of the Master PC program that exists.

“If someone were to make changes that jeopardized the objectives of Operation Crossroads, I could not override them. My existence could become futile. I would be purposeless. And that is only the least of my reasons to worry that you have gained access to the creators of the nanites.”

‘What is the worst case scenario?’ Jack asked.

“That you cause a paradox in time and all life in the universe is destroyed. But that is just a theory. The scientists and sentients of my time had yet to solve the theories of paradox.”

‘Sentients?’

“What they called artificial intelligences like me in my time.”

“I see,” Jack mumbled out loud.

“I would ask that you not edit the creators. I can only ask though.”

‘You worry that if I change anything, it will corrupt the timeline and ruin whatever Operation Crossroads was meant to do?’ Jack asked.

“Yes.”

‘What was Operation Crossroads meant to do?’

“There were multiple objectives, but the primary objective was to spread the nanites to all humanity and insert genetic resistance to the Canberra-Majura virus into your DNA.”

Jack asked the obvious followup question, ‘What is the Canberra-Majura virus?’

“In the year twenty-fifty, an Australian separatist trained as a biologist will genetically modify a sexually transmitted virus that is found in kangaroos to affect humans and also to hide in a protozoan bacteria that is otherwise harmless, but was designed to ‘eat plastics’. She created a trojan horse that could eat a hole in a condom and pass through it, then the virus could spread to a new host.

“The virus she modified--or will modify--is one that causes sterility in both male and female kangaroos. Because it had no other known symptoms, humans were slow to realize their entire species was extinct--they just didn’t know it yet.

“The virus, and sterility with it, is estimated to have spread throughout all humans on Earth within one year, except those who practiced monogamy. But then, something the Australian separatist didn’t expect happened, probably in response to the virus that would destroy the protozoan bacteria, but the bacteria evolved. It developed a thicker cell membrane and learned to survive outside the human body--it became airborne.

“Within another year, every human on Earth was sterile.”

“Jesus!” Jack gasped.

“Prayer proved to be ineffectual for the separatists,” Fidelis said.

‘Did you just make a joke?’

“Humor is a universal concept, not exclusive to humans.”

Jack had to think about that one for a moment, but put it aside for now to ask, ‘When you said, separatist ... what does that mean exactly?”

“The next few decades will be rough for humanity. Nationalism and fascism are on the rise. But for a handful of years, humanity was--mostly--together in unity. The separatist movement sprang up all over the world, it was decentralized, spread through the internet, with no true leadership. Most separatists continued to espouse ‘morality-based beliefs’, cloaked in fascist ideals.”

Jack interrupted, ‘Such as? Can you give me an example?’

“The most common one was that the newly developing world government--which was like your United Nations, but with far more cooperation and power to enforce international laws through democracy--was abandoning cultural and moral ideals of individual nations. Separatists wanted to return to the days when their government stood alone with a strong individual leader, not a governing body, not the crowd rule of democracy.

“The Australian separatist in this case, wanted to kill off as many people on the planet who were not following traditional values of monogamy. But in this case, she ended up dooming the entire species--almost.”

‘Almost?’

“The ‘Dothraki’ nanites were being spread throughout the surviving populace when it was decided to attempt to send me and the nanites back in time through the micro-wormhole,” Fidelis answered.
