Jack clicked on the icon, which looked pretty generic and just said MPC under it. The app loaded quickly and had a simple blue background. There was a help icon at the top right and a large white text box in the middle of the screen. Above it, was a prompt that said, “Please enter your name.”
Jack typed in, “Jack Edwards.”
The prompt changed, “Two results found within immediate range, please select which is the current user.”
Below that, it listed:
- Jackson Richard Edwards, III
- Jackson Richard Edwards, IV
Jack selected the second option and glanced at the clock, realizing his father must have gotten home since he’d come upstairs with the package. Jack, for the millionth time, had the fleeting thought that it was both stupid that he had the same name as his father, his grandfather, and his great grandfather. But also that it was kind of cool.
They all had nicknames though. Only his great grandfather had gone by Jack like him. His grandfather was Buck, his father was Jackson, and he’d been called Jack since he was an infant. Jack always joked with his dad that he’d been lucky no one ever called him something stupid, like Trip.
The prompt disappeared and the screen now said, “Welcome to Master PC, Jack.”
After a few seconds, the prompt now read, “Please enter subject name:” and below it was another white box.
Jack clicked on the box and entered ‘Jack Edwards’ again. This time the program said, “Several subjects within range that are a possible match, select the desired subject.”
Underneath, there was a list of seven names:
- Jackson Richard Edwards, III - 0mi.
- Jackson Richard Edwards, IV - 0mi.
- Johnson Edward Williams - 14mi.
- Jackson Richard Edwards, Jr. - 37mi.
- John Milton Edwards, 58mi.
- Jack Clayton Edwards, 77mi.
- Jaquelyn Louise Edwards, 97mi.
Jack frowned at the screen and thought a few of the possible matches were a stretch, but he just sighed and selected the second option.
A graphical avatar of himself appeared floating on the screen, loading from the feet up. At first, Jack was amazed that it did actually look like him. Then he realized that it not only looked like him but was dressed exactly like him.
For a moment, Jack paused and pondered the amazing technology that did actually seem like magic to him, even though he at least partially understood it. Then he frowned and mumbled, “How do the nanites know what I’m wearing?”
Shrugging after a moment, Jack examined the screen. When he touched the avatar of himself, it stopped rotating and he could control the rotation from all directions like any other phone app. When he clicked on his face, it zoomed in, focusing specifically on that aspect and two buttons appeared above the avatar. One labeled “physical”, the other labeled “mental”.
Jack clicked mental and several sliders and drop-down menus appeared, super-imposed over his avatar’s face. They listed things like IQ, EQ, ‘Streetsmarts’, Learning Ability, and many others as he scrolled. Jack wasn’t sure what all of them meant, but he saw that his Learning Ability was at 70% and the color of the slider range indicated that was higher than average, so he thought that was pretty good.
He knew EQ meant emotional quotient and measured a person’s ability to understand emotions, in themselves and others. His was at 87 and was in the average range. His IQ was listed as 104 and Jack also understood that to be in the average range.
