To understand what happened to Jack, we need to go back over a year. While this story starts when Jack gets his hands on the Master PC program, Jack’s story started long before that.
Jack was a fairly average high school sophomore in the greater Dallas area of Texas. He wasn’t a superb athlete or the smartest kid in school. He wasn’t strange, he wasn’t ugly, but he wasn’t exceptional in any way either. Even though Jack had slightly darker skin than the average white guy, most people couldn’t tell that he had some Mediterranean or Middle-eastern heritage. Jack was one of those guys whose greatest strength was that he knew he’d need to work really hard to achieve anything in life.
Despite his perfectly average existence, something changed in April of his Sophomore year. A chain of events began that led to Jack getting the Master PC program. But the first event was unrelated to Jack whatsoever.
Matthew Hoff wasn’t like Jack. He wasn’t perfectly average. He was an exceptionally smart Junior at Jack’s high school. He was also socially awkward, a loner, and the target of the school’s most sadistic bullies. He survived his years at South Ridge HS in Dallas, but escaped his bullies. With the exception of a few administrators and teachers, no one at South Ridge knew where Matthew had disappeared to in the middle of March.
But without their favorite target, the sadistic assholes who’d used Matthew as a source of torturous amusement for years were looking for a new one. No one knew why they suddenly chose Jack, but chose him they did.
Only a few weeks after Matthew had left, Jack found himself the target of an escalating campaign of emotional, psychological, and physical torture. After sixteen years of living a life of obscurity, Jack was instantly famous at his school. Thousands of other students saw him humiliated, demeaned, beaten, and eventually nearly killed.
Because Jack had never dealt with being the focus of a bully or, in this case, a gang of bullies, when he unexpectedly was their target, he didn’t have the right tools to deal with them. Not just their physical beatings, but his responses to their aggressive acts. Jack acted in a way they weren’t used to. He didn’t try to avoid them, he didn’t run away from them. At first, Jack tried to reason with them and even tried fighting back when that didn’t work. But these weren’t your average bullies, and it only escalated things.
At the end of Jack’s Sophomore year, the three bullies took things too far. They’d quickly escalated from the usual teasing and humiliation to physical beatings at school. But Jack had finally reported them when the physical beatings started. In a perfect world, it would have stopped there when the administration became aware of what was happening and the police would have gotten involved.
But this is not a perfect world.
