Chapter 10

Jack woke Wednesday morning and was entirely decided on his course of action. After his morning shower and some breakfast, Jack checked in with his mom and told her he was going to do some coursework until the afternoon and then spend an hour or so making sure the guest room was ready for Jessica’s visit.
Jack was doing his Junior year through homeschooling. Despite spending half the year in the Hospital, he actually found the homeschooling program easier. His mother had taken a lot of time off when he’d first been attacked, and was still only working part time. She was supposed to be monitoring his school progress, but he didn’t need oversight at this point. After he checked in with her, she decided to go to work, which meant Jack was alone in the house for the day.
Jack did do some school work, but he was already several weeks ahead of schedule and put it away after two hours. Then, with a fresh sheet of paper and a pen, he began writing out some things. On one side of the page, he wrote down a list of goals. On the other side, he started writing out a series of commands to execute those goals.
After two hours of work, he’d worked through several pages of paper and ended up with a final page of commands written up. He read through that page while eating some lunch and decided it needed no more tweaking or changes.
Jack opened the MPC app on his phone and began with the first command using the custom command feature once he’d opened his own avatar:
- Repair all damage and defects in my body and restore it to prime condition for my age, including removing any foreign bodies that are no longer medically necessary. These changes are to be immediate and not noticed by anyone but me.
Jack hit apply and the app gave him a message that said, “This command will partially be executed immediately and partially executed overnight while the subject is sleeping. Confirm?”
Jack tapped the confirm button and felt a tingle and some discomfort throughout his body. But within a few seconds, the sensations subsided and Jack immediately stood up, without the assistance of his cane, without pain.
Jack grinned and flexed his right knee several times, feeling no pain. He picked up his phone and entered the next four commands on the list:
- Ensure the secrecy of the restoration and healing of my body so that if anyone examines me or my medical information, they are not surprised or curious by the healed damage or the missing screws and plates.
- Give me perfect 20/20 vision and make it so no one notices that I don’t need glasses or contacts.
- Increase my automatic healing response so that I heal from injuries and wounds at the maximum possible rate. Additionally, give me the ability to regenerate missing body parts and organ damage if necessary.
- Make it so anyone who witnesses this increased healing cannot speak, write, or otherwise communicate about this to anyone else.
Jack applied these four commands immediately and other than a tingling in his eyes and a slight headache that lasted less than a minute, there was barely any noticeable effect until it was over. His vision was blurry and Jack had to go to the bathroom to remove and discard his contacts. He looked at the stack of unused disposable contacts that remained in his medicine cabinet with a sigh, “What a waste.”
Jack quickly typed a command into his phone so that his mother wouldn’t notice or find it curious that he never needed a new prescription or visit to the optometrist.
The next series of commands Jack entered were all designed to give him the strength, speed, dexterity, and physique that he desired. This series of commands included editing many of the sliders and submenus under the ‘Physical’ submenu. Most of this process felt like the most complex and extensive character creation process from a video game. When he had all the desired changes, Jack also spent several minutes changing the application parameters, so that no one would find the changes strange and the changes would all occur gradually over the following four months.
