Chapter 9

Jack switched back to his mother’s avatar and spent nearly thirty minutes researching the problem, eventually consulting the help menu for guidance. Asking the right questions and piecing together several different things, Jack discovered that his mother was actually outwardly happy, but inwardly facing some psychological issues. Ones that mostly stemmed from the attack Jack suffered.
Jack mostly pieced this together by examining the last two years of his mother’s sexual history. He wasn’t looking for details, but it eventually led to some examination of those. He was mostly looking at the frequency and the satisfaction and release that were achieved.
Before the beating, his mother and father had actually been having sex far more frequently than Jack had ever imagined. Usually three to five times a week for the last several years. Research on his computer confirmed that this was at least double what was considered a ‘normal baseline’ for a couple in their forties. It wasn’t unhealthy, by any means, or ‘abnormal’, just more than the baseline. And it was one indicator of a healthy marriage that both parties enjoyed this frequency.
However, in the month after the accident, there was zero sex being had, which Jack thought was probably normal, albeit stressful. But it was a stressful time. Then something changed and as far as Jack could tell, his mother began using sex for something other than was her norm.
While before the accident, they had sex three to five times a week and she usually masturbated at least once a week--another discovery Jack didn’t really want to think about--a month after the accident, his mother was initiating sex with his father at least once a day and often masturbated at least once a day. Jack’s new analytical powers really let him down when he realized that with him in the hospital and he knew his mother had taken a leave of absence prior to this time to spend as much time in the hospital as possible, Jack realized this meant his mother was probably making trips to the bathroom at the hospital to masturbate ... every day. This, Jack decided, was definitely not healthy. Jack thought it might be some sort of extreme stress relief, but then he found evidence during this time that her stress levels only got worse during the time period.

Finally, Jack thought he figured it out. He’d had to do a bunch of research online and asked a lot of questions that led to another area of the mental part of the app where Jack discovered that though she was outwardly happy, his mother was suffering from severe depression due to an irrational feeling of guilt about Jack’s beating.
