Tuesday. October 5th. 2010.

A year has passed since I last had sex. I thought about it every day, masturbated every night to the memory, and only watched porn where the guy was on all fours. As time passed, I got bored and moved onto more hardcore porn. I wished I would get lucky again, though I hadn’t seen Nick since we last had sex.

By October, I had doubts I’d ever have a chance like that again. I give up hope and returned my focus to school and football. I went to Bloomfield Hills High fifteen minutes away from me. My stepmom, Alma, usually drops me off in the morning on her way to work. Dad takes my brothers to school in Birmingham. I never attended schools in Pontiac despite living here. It’s not a great area, luckily we’re on the border of Bloomfield Hills where the area gets much better. Unfortunately, we’re on the poverty line, so there are nights where gun shots can be heard.

Bloomfield Hills High wasn’t bad. It’s a massive, two-story, modern building facing directly to road called Franklin. There was a different aura in the air from John D. Pierce Middle School in Waterford. Black people dominated that school, most didn’t like me because I was white and an omega. I didn’t fit in well and had a hard time. Luckily, I met Kendryck when I started sixth grade. He’s a social butterfly with many friends, for some reason he wanted to be mine. He defended me for three years; it absolutely broke my heart when we separated schools. I haven’t found anyone like Kendryck, thankfully the people are less in your face here and typically mind their business.

They’re still assholes, somehow worse than John D. Pierce because they have money.

I have my cousin, Aidan Church, in a few of my classes. We mainly talk during practice, since he has his group of friends that aren’t a fan of me. One afternoon, while preparing in the locker room for a game, I laid eyes on a heartthrob. A pale alpha with folded, dark eyes and stark black hair. He was tall and beefed up, came in with two other seniors laughing and joking amongst themselves. I had never seen the guy before; my heart never skipped a beat at anyone.

The guy notices me but doesn’t take a second glance. He continues to the sink with his buddies, grooming his feathery hair. I watch him, distracted from putting on my purple slacks. “Why are you staring at Basil?” Aidan came up behind me with a Black alpha named was De’Markus. He was the only other junior on the varsity team.

I jolt before I turn to him. “Who is he? I’ve never seen him before.”

“This is his second day. He transferred from Saginaw.”

“Is he a senior?”

“Yeah.” Aidan opens his locker.

“He’s cool too.” De’Markus opens his and yanks off his shirt. I continue to get dressed, putting on the gear before the jersey.

I look at him, eyelids lowering. “He’s already made friends.” He and the quarterback do a weird handshake. “Especially with Justin.”

“Everyone likes him.” Aidan leans in. “He’s kind of a douche.”

“He looks like one.” I chuckle, turning my attention back to my locker. Everyone gets into their gear and leaves the locker room for the bus. I sit in the middle alone, De’Markus sits across from me, Aidan always sits next to the window. The seniors pack loudly into the back. Basil plops behind us, not saying a single word, at first.

It’s a fifteen minute drive to Pontiac High School, our team were facing the Phoenixes today. I would’ve went to that school, but Dad promised Mom she would send us to Bloomfield Hills High because that’s where she graduated. We pass by the road to my house going North up Pontiac. My headphones were in, and I was listening to Metallica, mind wondering as I stare out the window. The wilderness passes by, there’s lot of greenery and houses planted in between. A tap on my shoulder makes me pluck a headphone out. I look at Aidan, whose blasting rock into his own ears and staring out of the window. I turn around, locking eyes with Basil.

“Yo.” Basil smiles. “What’s your name?”

“Vehren.” I cock my brow.

“Vehren? I’ve never heard of that name before.”

“Neither have I heard yours.”

“Touché. It’s easier to pronounce than ‘Bae-Seo’.’

I blink. “You’re right. What language is that?”

“Korean. I’m also part French, hence my last name ‘LaCroix’.”

“I’ve got a little French in me, mainly German and Japanese.”

“Ooh, you’ve got some Asian blood in you, too.”

I smile. “I do. My grandmother was fully Japanese.”

“Wow. I can kinda see it in your eyes.” He smiles as he stares. “They’re nice.”

“Thanks.” I brush a strain of hair behind my ear. “So, you’re new here?”

“I am. I’m from Saginaw. Sorry for bothering you, I like to make new friends.”

“It’s okay. What brings you to Pontiac?”

“My dad’s job relocated him. It sucks I didn’t get to practice with you guys before a game.”

“I’m sure you’ll be fine. What position?”

“Linebacker. What about you?”

“Running back.” I see Aidan take an earphone out. He looks at me then turns around. “This is my cousin, Aidan.”

“Yo.” Basil jerks his head up.

“What’s up?”

“Just chatting. What position do you play, Aidan?”

“I’m the kicker.” Aidan shrugs. “I got a good aim.”

Basil smirks at me. “Are you any good?”

I smirk with him. “I think I’m pretty good.”

“How old are you guys?”

Aidan answers, “We’re sixteen.”

“I’m eighteen.” Basil shrugs. “I got held back a year.”

“Shitty.” I said. “What year?”

“Seventh grade. It was no big deal.”

I make a light chuckle. “I almost got held back in eighth grade.”

“Bad grades?”

My eyes glance at Aidan. “I missed a lot of school.” He pops a single, bushy brow.

“Damn, that sucks. Doesn’t matter, you’re here now.”

“Yeah.” I say weakly.

Basil chuckles. “You guys seem chill.”

“We are.” Aidan lifts his chin.

“He could be cooler.” I shrug. He gives me a short look.

“Give me your numbers? We can chat after school. I want to make a group chat on Kik or something for the team so we all can talk.”

“Sounds like a good idea.”

“Sure.” I put Basil’s number in my phone and text him right away. Basil responds to the message. “Thanks for asking. I don’t usually talk to a lot of people.”
