I’ll admit it. I’m a huge fan of JPB. Okay, I don’t get along with every single one of his themes, but his writing style and pace always make me want to read and appreciate his work, even if sometimes I don’t love the endings. ‘Herman’, written back in 2012 and coming in at 34,000 words is one of his longest, and despite including cuckold, pornography and prostitution themes, is actually a really great romance. It’s also one of his most highly scored stories, rightly so, and I think more readers would enjoy it, which is why I’m giving it some publicity now.
Herman is an impecunious orphan who never knew his father, a college student only by dint of hard work and scholarships. Working in the student cafeteria to keep his head just above water financially, he is approached by a stranger and offered a part in a porn film she’s making. Expecting it to be a practical joke, he meets up with her, only to find that it’s a serious offer. Herman takes to porn like a duck to water, and we find out why in a well-related back story that then suddenly becomes current and relevant again.
With JPB’s usual aplomb, the hero is a sensible and level-headed young man who has had some very bad luck, and the reader roots for him as his luck massively improves.
If you haven’t read much of JPB’s back catalogue, I’d highly recommend this one. You don’t have to wade through all 752 (and counting) of his posted stories to find it, a Quick Search for ‘Herman’ will get you there. While you’re at it, go to JPB’s page and sort the stories by high score. There are some more great reads hiding away in the 76 (to date) pages of JPB’s output and I hope you’ll also like his very first posted story, back in 2006, ‘The Bought Husband’.
