I have noticed a bit of a trend. Whether it is caused by my choices for reading material, or whether it is truly a general phenomenon, there seems to be a lot of long sagas out there.

Chapter after chapter, thousands upon thousands of words. It seems that the world is split in two between very short vignettes or major opuses which take a month of Sundays to get through.

Not that there's anything wrong with a nice long tale. It's just that I often find myself forgetting what had happened in early chapters when I'm reading chapter 67. There's also the problem with trying to keep the naughty bits still fresh and 'naughty.'

This story could quite easily have fallen into that trap. It could have become some sort of road-trip of experiences that eventually ran out of gas before the end and none of the characters would have been missed because I just didn't care about them any more.

INSTEAD, CotN managed to get from start to finish with a sense of immediacy that felt like real-time.

Characters were introduced in a way that matched the pace of the story and I really enjoyed how I felt as if I was on the trip with Travis and Anya. I enjoyed the stream, meeting and leaving the people they met and the growing relationship between the two of them.

The basic plot of the story is simplicity itself. Lose Someone, find someone, bring them back.

Fick Suck goes on to use this plot to uncover the relationships and emotions that his central character experiences.

The use of a major religious icon as a character device is inspired. I am reminded of the 60's and cartoons like 'Nard 'n' Pat' and I must say, if I was ever tempted to give up atheism, it would be to follow a deity who swears about getting his nose broken and likes to eat stale tootsy rolls.

Apparently there were people who complained about that part of the story. To that, I would say - get over yourselves.

I hope I have given none of the plot away. I hope too, that I have piqued your interest enough to go and take a look at it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story -- I am sure there's going to be a follow on, my holy vision has told me :)
