Spoiler alert – this story is unfinished and the author has passed. Which is a damned shame. On both fronts.
John Edward Brock is about to be cleaned out by his wife and her lover – his former boss and best friend. With the help of a terminally-ill boyhood friend, Robert, he arranges to disappear deep into the Minnesota wilderness for a couple of years, to really screw up his wife’s legal machinations. Exploring the remote and hidden cabin, he finds a bunch of keys and follows the instructions to fit one of them into an opening by the mantelpiece.
Nothing happens.
Until the next morning, when, instead of the minus forty blizzard that was blowing, it’s a warm spring day. That’s magic for you. And, just like that, the ‘betrayal’ story turns into a time-travel / action-adventure tale. And, in my opinion, a very good one.
‘Warlord’ had an incredible imagination, a great sense of humour, and an enviable ability to write descriptive prose. The characters are well portrayed. His attention to detail rivals the also late lamented ‘Howard Faxon’, and it’s clear that he put an incredible amount of effort into making his magic world work. Okay, you’ll feel frustrated and let down when you get to the point where the story abruptly stops, but you’ll get a lot of pleasure out of what is there.
Well-crafted, no major spelling or grammatical errors that I saw, and a fascinating plot with plenty of meat left on the bones. Could easily have been novel-length. What’s not to like? Oh. The lack of ending. I DO so wish you’d been spared to finish all your stories, ‘Warlord’.
