I have a Thing for do-over stories—where the protagonist finds themself returned to an earlier point in their life. A chance to do things over, hopefully better this time. The appeal may be a reflection of my middle-age, but I still roll with it. My point being, I’ve read a lot of them, including most of what’s on SOL.

I’m also a sucker for Lockwood’s brand of teen romances. This do-over story, incomplete as it is, is far and away my favorite of his. The focus here is the psychic clash of protagonist’s before and after selves, with a sidelight on the ethics of changing the timestream. I like both of those concerns. Those are hard to pull off in a balanced way, and Lockwood succeeds.

Fair warning: the story is unfinished. That said, the penultimate chapter works as an end of an episode, giving you a somewhat satisfying conclusion if you skip the last chapter. Or you can read that last bit (it’ll be hard to resist) for a preview of where things are going next.

Over the the last few years, we have had the pleasure of many Authors who have become "Household Names" to SOL subscribers, and we are lucky, in my humble opinion, to have Don Lockwood as a contributor. With Don's contribution to the life transference genre, the pleasure of reading Don's story is worth everything.

This is a story of a young boy with the memories of a much older person who it seems dies unwanted and unmourned. His really best friend is Beth, diagnosed with incurable leukaemia, who dies tragically at a very early age. He is devastated, and promises Beth, on her death bed, to look after Olivia, the daughter of an alcoholic mother, and an absent father. Eddie, our hero, has many sexual partners, and finally falls in love with the one girl he least expects to return his love.

If for nothing else this story is worth reading for the death of Beth, as told by Eddie. But be prepared; the entire story contains vignettes of his attempts to change his life from the school nerd into a decent un-bullied young man happy with his new life, even though he is unable to stop John Lennon's murder. The sex scenes are stroke-worthy and the Band they organize keeps an old Springsteen fan happy. Mr. Lockwood came to my attention with his Naked in School stories, but he has shown an increasing maturity in his writing that demands your attention.

I only hope he soon finishes his opus.
