Folks, I love to say this: I'm a sucker for a real nice tear jerker love story, and this is it! And on top of this it comes out of the pen, oops keyboard of a favorite Author of mine Frank Downey himself. Meredith is an up and coming actress who becomes enamored with her own self worth, but is redeemed by her parents decision to take a hiatus from her Hollywood career and move to up-State NY near Albany where she meets and falls in love with Josh who falls in love with her freckles! Also befriended by Josh's very good friends Tomasz and Kylie; he a six-six Football Player, and she is a five foot nothing Korean who misfit perfectly with each other.
We must blame the Bard for the fact that true love never does run true, But all is well that ends well, (where have I heard that before?) Thanks to Frank's enjoyable prose; with just enough sex to make it interesting, for she is a virgin and so is he, until ... Well you had better read all about it before the Enquirer gets ahold of it!
Enjoy!

I first read this story when first posted about 3 years ago. I just re-read it, and enjoyed it as much once again.

"Transcending the Role" by Frank Downey has actually stayed in my head all these years. It is that memorable. It is that enjoyable.

This is the story of a highly successful teen actress and home town high school junior who meet under the bleachers and become good friends. During the course of the fall, they pass "good friends" and without even stopping to collect $200, they move right into being in love.

Of course, there are conflicts and differences. They need to be resolved. You need to read the story to enjoy it all.

Frank Downey stories tend to be heavy with "sweetness & light," an almost syrupy happiness infused in every paragraph. He also includes sex when it is appropriate, but the story is NOT about sex; it is not a simple stroker.

There has been mention of a perceived inaccuracy in the location of the girl's hymen. I've been the happy recipient of that gift several times, and I must say a girl's hymen can be near the entrance or far enough inside to get at least a third of my average size inserted before initiating pain. The human gene pool allows for great variety.

I highly recommend "Transcending the Role" to anyone who enjoys a happy, sunny story with enough sex to make it real fun.

In "Transcending the Role", we read about a Junior in High School that befriends a popular Hollywood actress that is living in his small town and going to his High School.

Josh and his friends don't hold Meridith in awe, and therefore help ground her, at least initially. Then, she wins an Oscar, and goes out of control. Can they survive this? Read along!

This story had a decent amount of sex in it, but like most of Frank Downey's stories, it isn't about the sex, but about the relationship. So, while the sex is pretty good, it isn't done to scorch your eyeballs. And there's nothing wrong with that. The author did botch the location of the hymen, placing it apparently several inches inside the vagina, instead of at its very entrance. That ruined the initial sex scene for me, and was a surprising mistake from an author of Frank's caliber.

The plot itself is a lot of fun. Famous Hollywood actors have their names modified to put them in the script, and "Tim Hicks" comes across just as you would imagine Tom Hanks would. And, like most of Frank's stories, you could have a diabetic episode from reading it.

Technically, this story is inferior to many of Frank's other works. There were a lot of typos that kept teasing my eyes away from the story.

I do enjoy Frank's work as a general rule, and the plot and characters in this story were great. The technical errors and the sex scene mistake took away from what could have been a really great story. It's still a very good story, though, and one which readers of sugary romances should really enjoy.
