Reviewed:
In "The Book", we have the story of a young man that finds a book in a crawlspace of his place, and upon reading it, finds he can control minds. Read along as he starts to flex his new powers on the people around him.
The sex in the story was usually pretty hot. However, the author played the "let's see how many phrases for female anatomy I can throw into one story" game, and that really started to wear on me.
The overall plot is very spotty. The author even admits that he threw sex scenes into it because he felt like it. The plot is also left in an unfinished state. The author was on to a nice potential story when it abruptly ends. There is an author’s note tacked into the late stages, and then 4 really unrelated stories that revolve around “The Institute” that were tacked on as an afterthought.
Technically, the story is quite poor. Misspelled words, failure to capitalize proper nouns, and two people speaking in the same paragraph happened with too much frequency.
This story was originally posted well before the SOL date shown, to alt.sex.stories.moderated, and I remember it as probably the first “MC” story I can recall. Considering the story was copyrighted back in 1993, this may be one of the earliest stories I can recall, period. I’m showing my age, aren’t I? hehehe
Considering it has been over 14 years since this was originally posted, the fact that I remember it so clearly despite its poor technical score shows how much it warped my fragile little mid-20’s mind. That, and I couldn’t care less about grammar and spelling back then. The sex was scorching hot for its time, to the point that I’ve had a self-edited copy of this on my HD for over a decade.
This story is definitely one of the all-time classics of the MC genre in my opinion, even in its clearly unfinished state. You can see many of the early forms of how MC was done, and how the genre was starting to develop into its nearly predictable form it has today. This story was also some of the inspiration for the epic length tale “Tim, the Teenage MC” written by Russ Senip, which is also considered a golden oldie of the MC genre.
This story makes for very good stroke, especially if you can overlook the poor technical part. While this story now pales in comparison to many of today’s great stories, I still like to look back it on occasion and remember the glorious early days of Usenet and the hallowed paths that are alt.sex.stories.moderated.
