I just discovered this short story. The author mentions the inspiration from a story by MOF called Downward Spiral that was incomplete and no longer available.
I believe I recall that story, but I do not remember the details.
The only complaint I have about this story, is that is simply not long enough. It's my complaint about well-written short stories. Once I fall in love with the characters - the story ends and I lose touch with the characters before I get a chance to care about them.
On a technical side, I saw no grammatical issues and it the story telling is top notch.
Writing a short story is difficult because you have to jump past the exposition and get right into the meat of the story. In this one, the author immediately paints a picture of the storyteller as 40 year old woman checking herself out in the mirror.
It immediately hit all of my buttons right out of the gate. I won't spoil it for you - because I hope you read it.
However, I will say that often in BDSM stories there are people who are painted as "lifetime submissives" where they do not have a volume control - it's one speed/one size fits all.
They are collared, naked, live this way 24/7 and there are no bills, groceries, realities to deal with. It's great as a fantasy if you want to read about Billionaires and your name is Alexis Steele or something.
But back in reality, most people put their bondage in a box, slide it under the bed and take it for parties and sessions.
Even people who make fetish/bdsm part of their everyday lives - have to have concessions for reality. They may see their husband or wife as their dominant at all times, but tend to get on in the vanilla world as everybody else does - working a job, raising kids, etc.
They may have an understanding about who makes the decisions about money, or if they are swingers about when/where that can take place but overall most kinky people do what everybody else does.
What I liked the most about this story, was that Pat wrote about people from that category, and didn't get preachy about it. It just was what it was - and it felt organic.
Again, all I can say here is that if I'd give it a 9.999 on Appeal but it could have a 10 if there was a sequel that extended these character's on their next adventure. Maybe a vacation - head to the beach or the pool, visit some other family at a reunion, or just continue where this story leaves off.
All in all, a great short read.
