I have to admit that at times on SOL I am blown away by the creativity of the author community.
I once read that there were something like seven universal plots and perhaps 36 root variations that had been identified. That doesn't mean there aren't exceptions to the rule, but you can trace many stories told in every culture and time period back to these roots and ultimately the universal seven universal plots.
Caveman Courtship could be set in 1987 Minnesota, because it has a universal plot that is really a coming of age story about a journey into manhood and acceptance.
What makes it truly unique is obviously the neolithic/cro-magnon culture and values, while at the same time making some concession to readability so that the communication skills of the people in the moose tribe are presumed to be similar to our own.
It may have been spoken in a series of growls, clicks and finger gestures but you will have to suspend disbelief and just enjoy that the meaning of the words were conveyed.
I was reminded as I read this of the vastly underated "Quest for Fire" which was a no-dialogue movie about the journey across the cro-magnon world to ultimately attain the legendary 'fire' that they saw as critical to their survival. It was a movie ahead of it's time.
This is not an epic story, weighing in at only four chapters but it is a fantastic quick read if you are looking for something different than the usual. I truly enjoyed it and I think you may as well.
I'd love to be as creative as REP and think outside the box to tell such clever stories. I'd love to see more stories that do that - not neccesarily in caveman times, but just that redefine what might be construed as erotic literature or simply just literature.
(Mostly erotic though, as that is my jam)
