Reviewed:

Set in the deep rain forest, the story produces images of what it is like to be in the Amazon. It is both a botanist's paradise and an anthropologist's nightmare.

Above all, it is a most beautiful story, riveting and delightful of natural humans living naturally, primitively. Their customs and behaviors are not only intriguing to our "civilized" way of life, but underscore our artificial means of going about living it. The sentence that stands out and to some extent summarizes this theme is when the main character says, "The irony of it [sex with a minor] being illegal in my world but the only legal sex [condoned and encouraged] I am allowed to have here." It is a forceful and credible statement, especially the lead-up to it.

Unfortunately, the indigenous people's savagery is testimony to the dark nature of humans played out throughout history of mankind still to this day. The author describes tribal adversity and the actions not only in detail but in perfect sequence as if the reader were amidst the strife or off to the sideline witnessing the whole ordeal.

The story does not have a happy ending. We always want the people with whom we identify to be successful and fulfilled. However, it is uplifting, knowing the emotional moment of truth that the character realizes. In that sense, the potential for happiness prevails.

Maybe the ending is a hint for a sequel. The story deserves it; the readers deserve it. With the author's talent, it should be within her reach and something for her readers to look forward to.
