Reviewed:
I'll begin by saying that I have read the whole book. I'm greedy and realistically don't have a lot of time left.
I'll note, in begining, that I'm considering _Hidden Heritage_ as single, very long novel.
In a good long novel there are often inflection points that make the change obvious. (slight spoiler if you haven't read Guardians) Stian leaves the elves, his adopted people to move to the city where he hopes to find the information needed to help the people.
In Guardians DeeBee has a large story writen over a large physical area, in The Scholars, it's a large story over a much smaller space so events seem closely packed together sometimes. The characters are, as is generally true of DeeBee, well crafted and draw the reader in with concern for 'people" we care about. The interactions are realistic and consistant(baring the occasional plot twist) for the characters acting in a realistic manner.
The final chapter or three should have you on the edge of your seat wondering if it will work out, and I'm not telling.
If you haven't started the long book, then Guardians is the place to begin, otherwise have at this one "The Scholars" as soon as you can.
Some sex content in the context of the story line development, but if you're looking for a "bonk-a-thon" you might be happier elsewhere.
I would consider this book (DeeBee's work generally) to equal or exceede contemporary publishing standards.
