Author's Description:
New Orleans used to be a city of elegance and beauty. It's all gone now, and instead of laissez les bons temps rouler, I get the leftovers from a Cold War era gulag. Except sometimes, I see things. Hear things too. A brass band leading a funeral procession. A whiff of magnolia. The whisper of live oaks draped in Spanish moss. I don't know what's real anymore. And I can't get out.

Oleander Dreams is a fantastically languorous tale, evocatively cutting between the aromatic atmosphere of present day New Orleans and the futuristic ‘utopian’ setting that the protagonist finds herself oppressed by. The prose is intricately carved to deliver unease, nostalgia, and mystery. Without revealing too much, there is a remarkable superimposition occurring in the story that both enhances the horror and makes the reader wonder 'What if...?’

(This story is part of the ‘Beyond the Wall of Sleep’ universe, a collection of horror stories by various authors.)
