This is the second story I have read by this author. Just like the first one, it has a lot of promise and potential. Although supposedly in the same universe as the other work, the magic in this story works differently, leading me to believe that it is in another universe altogether.
For plot, I give this a B (7). This is obviously the first book in a series, and I would want to read the rest.
For technical score, this is again where the work needs help. I give it a D (5), and reserve the right to change that if the author gets the work properly edited for spelling, punctuation, word use and grammar.
For appeal, I give is a B (7). It may deserve a higher score, but I personally don't care for M/M scenes. They do absolutely nothing for me. If I omit those from the story, my appeal score may go to an 8 or a 9. As they say, different strokes for different folks.

This is the first book of what promises to be a series. It's worth reading. One warning, if MM or even MMF action squicks you, this may be one to avoid. It starts on a future earth and the heterosexuality and fertility of the hero is demonstrated. Then he transfers to an alternate earth with magic related to various jewelry that higher levels come in boxes with several jeweled items. He finds some people to love and others to protect, and it ends as he is about to sail away to another continent.
Lets do the numbers, 5 is a D, 6 is a C, 7 is a B, 8 is an A. Nine is an A plus and Ten is really rare. I am rating plot as an 8, an A. Lots of interesting things happen and there are surprises and many villains to overcome. Technical Quality is poor. There are no misspelled words but spellcheck lets the wrong word take the place of the right one. Some of the usual homonyms occur with annoying frequency. I am rating it as a 5. I strongly recommend a proofreader to the author. The final score, appeal to reviewer is a seven. This may be premature, there are other books coming and lots more action and adventure is expected, at least by me. As book one stands by itself, I am not as enthusiastic about the story as others I have rated an eight. Better than average, but not much better. It might be a B plus, especially if you like Australian English.
