This story has a lot going for it. It puts together an older white man and black woman and child. How they get together is a little unrealistic, but how the man and woman relate really makes the story. But it also hurts it in that it focuses almost entirely on the vulnerabilities and insecurities of the man without exploring those of the woman, making it somewhat unbalanced. However, since the author hints at a possible sequel, maybe this problem will be solved.
Technically, the writing is good. None of my usual squicks, i.e. misspellings, poor grammar, homonymic/homophonic errors, etc, are present. In my opinion, it's current rating of around 6.65 is about 1.5 too low. And here's hoping for the hinted at sequel.
