This is the second Swarm story by this author I reviewed. I voted it very good. I feel much better about the corporal punishment in this story than I did about it in the other (Einstein) story, as it is by a sponsor to his concubines and older dependents and is required to safely continue the voyage as the alternative is to recycle offending concubines. This story does not flow as some other Swarm stories, the ending in particular seems a little tacked on to get to a resolution. It does end with a life changing event, but death of the protagonist is not one of those events I would recommend to most authors.
Once again we have a 9 plus CAP score hero, a retired Marine who starts off with ten concubines and 135 dependents at an early extraction. He adds a lot more concubines and dependents during the trip and how he handles the problems are the bulk of the story. I particularly enjoyed that part of the story and think its adds something to the normal bonding and sex that occur in most of the trips to the colonies stories. Clearly this author is a little more into corporal punishment than most, but it fit into this story. I saw no technical quality issues and this story fits better into the Swarm Cycle cannon as I understand it. I recommend this story as an opportunity to gain new insight into the Swarm Cycle.
