College-aged romance with no to low levels of angst

Eldof ๐Ÿšซ

Hi everyone.

I just read The Bitch and it left me with a taste for more, as it's unfinished and has no signs of any activity. So yeah, I'm in the mood for some romance where the main characters are around college age. But, I don't like the angst that's often associated with college, such as frat orgies, drunken infidelity, breaking off relations to "experiment and have fun in college" etc. That's something I really liked in The Bitch, any angst was very low-key.

Other stories that I've read that could fit what I'm looking for but you don't need to recommend would be Daze in the Valley, Finding a Place and maybe Lady in Red.

As for other themes to exclude, I don't like swinging and if there's any rape, I'd like it to be off-screen and not graphic. Oh, and the longer story the better, no 3 chapter short stories please.

Does one need to read any other stories in the Damsels in Distress universe to understand and enjoy Shiloh?

It's good to understand the universe canon to help understand some of the assumed aspects, that's part of why I ended up writing the DiD guide book at:

https://storiesonline.net/s/76905/damsels-in-distress-rules

the other reason was to lay out the rules for those who wished to write stories in the universe.

While the great majority of the stories by the different authors are good stand alone stories the ones that are part of a series make more sense when read in order. Shiloh was written as a stand alone story and it does make sense by itself, while you can get a bit more out of it if you know the Did universe history and rules as it adds to those rules and the history (with Lazlo's prior permission). The same is true of my Chaos Calls stories set in the Did universe.

edit to add: the guide is only 6,800 words so it's short.

Janna Leonard's 'Nollie' runs from age sixteen through college and beyond. Minimal angst in the core relationship.

Oyster50's Smart Girl stories are largely concerned with girls going to college, but college age is another matter. Most of the stories have very low relationship angst once the relationship happens.

angst/รคNG(k)st/
noun

a feeling of deep anxiety or dread, typically an unfocused one about the human condition or the state of the world in general.

Human condition
The human condition is "the characteristics, key events, and situations which compose the essentials of human existence, such as birth, growth, emotionality, aspiration, conflict, and mortality". Wikipedia

That particular word can mean many things. It's a stick of dynamite in a pond where a simple fishing rod will do.

Glad you clarified the intent, many don't bother.

I'm sure Douglas Fox's Lost and Found meets your criteria, but to understand it fully you need to read the other stories in the series on Kyle Martin first as they start years earlier and cover his high school years as well. In order they are:

Is the separation from his childhood sweetheart mentioned in the blurb not angsty? I'll take your word for it, but long distance relationships are prime territory for college-angst!

And is the M/M tag graphic and a recurring thing? I'm usually a bit squeamish about that!

There's also a group-sex tag in all stories about Kyle except for the first one, and as I mentioned I'm not into swinging or sharing women with other men to expand on that. Is that going to be a problem if I read this?

After reading the first 8 chapters, it seems like the story is the exact opposite of my criteria? The angst levels are HIGH in this. Not even 10 chapters in and one of them have cheated and they're broken up.. And after searching through the epub text, it seems like they're still not together even after 2/3rds of the story. Just how is does it meet the criteria of a romance with college aged kids with no to low levels of angst?

Probably a misunderstanding.
When I read your post I had problems to understand what you meant with "with no to low levels of angst".
I first assumed a typo: "with no too low levels of angst", and you are searching for medium to high levels of angst. Rereading the sentence I realized you meant no or just low levels.

I could see that, but if one read my post and not just the subject line, I wrote what I don't like. Drunken infidelity was one of the examples I picked, and within the first couple of chapters that's exactly what happens so I don't know why it was recommended.

Does that realization make you wish you had included that information as an author's note attached to the story - instead of just in a separate post?

What are you on about? I'm not an author, why would I attach notes to any stories?

All I'm saying is, if I ask for something to be excluded, please don't recommend stories that includes it. If I ask for a romantic stories without any M/M and rape, I don't want to be recommended a story where there's M/M rape in the first few chapters. In this case, I wrote that I didn't want any drunken infidelity, and it happened in the first few chapters.

I don't think that it's too much to ask for people not to recommend stories that includes themes that I specifically asked to be excluded.

It isn't.

However, you are presuming that everyone reads (in full) AND actually comprehends that which you write. Therein lies the fatal flaw...

It's a slow process - we're in the middle somewhere, rapidly approaching the point of no return.

Never said that it was a finished event, it is ongoing, similarly to the fall of Rome, which took centuries. We just need some drunken fool to fiddle.

Fall in Rome takes three months, every year. It is the same everywhere. Perhaps the advent of bad weather makes it seem longer. Perhaps you should call it the Autumn of Rome.

OK, if we are going to be pedantic about it: 'The Collapse of the Roman Empire', beginning with the assassination of Julius Caesar.

I'd disagree that the assassination was the fall of the Empire, more that the crossing of the Rubicon was the end of the Roman Republic.

But that's neither here nor there, so I just groan at the horrible pun he made and wonder if the Roman's that claimed Nero set the city on fire worked for the mainstream-media, or if I get accused of heresy when I bring up that Rome fell because of foreign immigration and religious intolerance.

There's always trolls anywhere. Or sometimes people forget things in stories they've read in the past.

Anyways, I'd recommend these three. It meets your criteria perfectly, as I used to like these type of stories.

Opus One by Ryan Sylander.
https://storiesonline.net/s/48790/opus-one
It's a well written harem story in college. I don't remember any drama at all, but more about three people exploring romance together.

OVERBOARD! by HandyMan
https://storiesonline.net/s/75245/overboard
Overboard is a very short story/tryout started off by osyter50 and HandyMan borrowed it to write his own story.
It's a college girl with an older man romance. There's an attempted rape from the female's classmate as the premise and some threats by that same person later but that's as far as it goes. No actual rape or anything serious.

There are other versions of "Overboard" by different authors. DON'T READ THOSE. Some of those have gratuitous rape scenes that really serves no purpose to the story.

If you have amazon unlimited, you can try
More Than Water by Renee Ericson.
It's a traditional boy meets girl in college and almost no drama/angst either. Although, there is some tension at the end for some spice but not anything serious.

If you branch out of SOL to real publishers, there's a whole genre on these type of stories by Harlequin or Carina Press publishers. You can find free ebooks lending at your library's overdrive.com.

Oyster50 had the original story idea, but didn't want to write the whole story. He put it there for anyone else who wanted to tackle. These two were the ones that took it on.

I liked HandyMan's take on the idea. I don't remember if I ever read brertuck's version.

There is a little angst in looking back to high school, but only a teeny bit in the present.

You might like to sample Coaster2's stories. A common theme is coming-of-age and making a success of life through a hard-work ethic. There are relationships and break-ups but nothing too angsty. My particular favorite is 'Life on Another Planet'. The recent 'Walk Like a Man' was very good too.

Rome fell beacause time changed, and Rome wouldn't, couldn't or did not keep up with the changes. Much like any civilization or empire. Mongol, American, British, Persian, Egyptian...times and people change. You either adapt, or you die.

Nuff said.

But what does ANY of this have to do with the OP?

I call to have this thread closed and reopened back to its original intent. Though, if you really want teens without angst, search under fantasy.

Strictly speaking, the OP did not ask for teen romance, it asked for college aged romance. which if you include MCs looking for a graduate degree, can go up to the late 20s. Bachelors 18-21 or 19-22 depending on HS grad at 17 or 18), Add another 2 years for a Masters degree or another 3-4 years for a doctorate. Both will take you out to at least 28

The age range is just after the eternally popular "coming of age" which often matches with high school, and fits with New Adult (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_adult_fiction).
