Why is my story not getting any votes?

August Strong 🚫
Updated:

Maybe it's a stupid question, but my 5th book is not getting any votes, even though I'm putting a lot of effort into this book.

Is the story too long or does it bore readers? So far I have only received one encouraging comment, but no votes. Others have already received a lot of votes, even though they have only published the first chapter, and the content is hard to grasp.

And a second problem: I received an bad email about the following chapter:

Is the circumcision of little girls really only understandable if you are a Muslim? For me it is inhumane, a crime, but I was told that it is a centuries-old tradition that ensures the purity of families. No non-believer has the right to criticize it.

@August Strong

"No non-believer has the right to criticize it" is bullshit.

The right to criticize something does not depend on your other beliefs.

If we apply that standard, then there are a large number of evils we wouldn't be allowed to condemn, including killing people of other religions.

Ignore that comment.

The right to criticize something does not depend on your other beliefs.

The right to express oneself is a human right of the first order (Cf US Constitution, Amendment I, as one example; other constitutions have similar provisions). It does not and cannot depend on the willingness of the hearer, or on their feelings, emotions, or sensitivities.

That said, while you are free to express yourself, you are not free from social consequences for that expression (e.g. being fired, being refused entry onto private property, losing friends, etc).

Unfortunately, in the United States, we sure do. You get to have an opinion, whether you believe in whatever, understand it, or the other person agrees with your opinion.

Kinda like how I hate when people call EMTs and paramedics "ambulance drivers…" Way more goes into that training...

Not in the cancel culture world. Thankfully, people and corporations are waking up from that nighmare.

Yeah, you can use whatever pronouns you want, but don't get pissed if I don't buy into that game. In the back of an ambulance for over 20 years, I didn't care, and I don't care now...

Don't get pissed off, but is voting enabled? How many downloads do your new chapters generate? IME, about 5% to 10% of regular readers vote on a story.

I thought that it was no longer possible to turn voting off, a change introduced a year or two ago. It was publicised in https://storiesonline.net/d/s1/site-announcements back then.

August Strong 🚫

@Argon

No, voting is possible. A friend of mine has voted. Maybe it really is the minimum number of 20 votes that is needed for a result to be shown at all. Thanks for your comment.

One thing I noticed is that there are less downloads than previous parts of this story. Only 2k people have read it. And I THINK that each chapter counts as a separate download.

@akarge

The way downloads for a story currently works means that is someone were to read all of a story with ten chapters, download counter could be incremented between one and ten times depending on how many days it takes the reader to finish the story.

my 5th book is not getting any votes,

Based on your previous stories, you should probably have close to 20 votes, after which the total should appear.

Others have already received a lot of votes, even though they have only published the first chapter, and the content is hard to grasp.

Fanbois have their favourites. It's not fair, but that's just the way things are.

Is the circumcision of little girls really only understandable if you are a Muslim?

Female genital mutilation is a cultural practice predating Islam. It's unfortunate that most practitioners are in countries that have since converted to Islam, but plenty of other Moslem countries do not practice it.

I am sure others are like me in that they do not vote on a story until they have read the whole thing. Some stories start off great, and then go down hill from there.

@August Strong

Is the story too long or does it bore readers?

Given the decrease in scores and the steep drop in readership, combined with the preference of the site's users for longer stories. I would say the later is the culprit.

REP 🚫

@August Strong

even though I'm putting a lot of effort into this book.

Getting votes has very little to do with how much effort you put into a story when that effort essentially produces a rehash of prior content. The main factors are a good plot and good execution.

I have been reading your story. My impression is you are putting too much emphasis on pregnant teenagers, Rus's money, and legal complications. These topics have been the mainstay of your prior books. The topics have been run into the ground. You need to introduce new topics. That's my opinion for what it is worth.

I've read the first 3 chapters. I find myself paging through scenes with brief pauses to see it you have ended the scene or at least given it a new twist. I think I end up skipping more than half of each chapter.

@REP

Thank you very much. Good comments and suggestions. The main idea of my story is the coming of age in completely strange conditions, how to organize the life in complete isolation, especially the education and preparation of the young ladies to master their own life in the future. I met a woman from Moldova. She was in an isolated place from the age of 12, abused and could only survive with enough alcohol and drugs after she was released.

Given REP's standing and sensibility along with my own experience of scoring and reader foibles, and how in this case they are of similar impression. I would definitely suggest that the brutal truth of the matter is as Rep says (I've not read your work, so can't definitively say, but the sharp drop off in readers as the story progresses, along with the drop in both votes and score -Book four being an outlier - is a massive red flag).

These topics have been the mainstay of your prior books. The topics have been run into the ground. You need to introduce new topics

Which is the more polite way of saying 'Your story is now boring'. The good thing is, you were obviously already worried about that to mention it in the first place, so it should be easier for you to change tack and course correct. Or if you are brave enough, to go back, edit, course change and re-post. :)

Lubrican is very successful and all (most?) of his stories deal with women getting pregnant.

all (most?) of his stories deal with women getting pregnant.

In the story, the MC is the only adult male that lives in the valley. I have forgotten the exact number of single females in the valley but it is somewhere over 30, and the majority of the female population are under about 18. A large number of those under 18 teenagers have given birth to one or more of the MC's children or are currently pregnant by the MC, and the girls under 14 are waiting until they are old enough for the MC to impregnate them. I recall there being somewhere around 15 children who have the MC as their father. The MC tries to find husbands for the young mothers. There have been numerous similar discussions about the situation in the valley with each repeating significant amounts of the prior discussions to lay the foundation for the current discussion.

This situation is significantly different than pregnancies in Lubrican's multiple stories addressing pregnancies.

Well, you also have the fact that medically, pregnancy risk for both mother and child increases for very young mothers. I've seen stories (not necessarily here) that mention that.

I can overlook this age range; they are fantasies so it's not that big a deal to me. There is a story on here that if you do the math had an 11 – 12 year old girl had a baby, with out going to a hospital, it was one of the things that completely took me out of the story.

I can't tell exactly how many votes your latest story has but doing a sort shows its score to be lower than 6.99.

@August Strong

My perhaps wrong conclusion is: the already edited chapters will be submitted. I will try to shorten some of them. The main question of how it was possible for Rus and other Russian oligarchs to become so rich in just ten years is answered in chapter 12. I searched the Internet and found interesting facts about privatization in Russia and Ukraine.
The following chapters have new ideas and components: travel, gold production, marriage, helping the homeless.
I will keep your suggestions in mind as I continue with Book 6.
Thank you all for your recommendations.
PS: And now there are 20 votes - score 6.22
You are right - my story is boring
