Epic Length Recommendations

octavion55 ๐Ÿšซ

Pretty much title but assume I have at least looked at anything listed on the author choices and other similar lists so recommend something I might have missed that is good. I generally prefer it to have at least minimal sex but if there is a good reason to read something without it give me a pitch on it other than just the name. I read a lot and mostly am looking for good story telling. My favorite Author on this site as an aside is Jay Cantrell and Ryan Sylander.

So we can assume you've already read Stupid Boy, A Well-Lived Life, Living Next Door to Heaven, and Summer Camp?

How about Model Student, The Transmogrification of Jacob Hopkins, and John Carter?

All but model student I believe.

Actually can't even find it, is it somewhere else or a different name?

What is the minimum word count you regard as epic length as different people and different genres have different word counts?

I found both stories in The Knox Family series by the Outsider to be very good. It's over on the sister site Finestories

https://finestories.com/series/49/jeff-knox

If you like sci-fi give mine, Arkadia, a try. Inspired by but not part of the Swarm series. It's different than a majority of the Swarm stories. "The Confederacy is found culpable in the deaths of his parents because of an AI withholding information, resulting in a whole new world opening up for our MC, DeDeus Sanderson. Read of his encounters with the Confederacy and others as he gathers colonists."

I liked the Arkadia story premise but the writing! Ugh. Every third sentence ending with hahaha. Gave up.

Seriously, do a word count on "hahaha".

T.

Also everything came to him just a little too easily. Keep it up though. Some judicial editing and you'd have a winner there.

Yep that was the biggest complaint, along with my use of acronyms, but it tis what it tis. It bothered some more than others, and some never mentioned it. Ya can't please everyone so you should at least please yourself, and I did :)

I was/am happy with the story but have taken the comments into consideration in other stories I'm working on.

Honor Harrington universe.

David Weber's books took up TWO boxes by themselves when I packed my bookshelves for moving. So did John Ringo.

Also, if I can self-promote an epic length series on here:
A True History, by ... oh, yeah, me!

I also reread Love Never Changes recently, cleaning it up. I'll get that posted at some point.

Fanfic for Honor Harrington universe. Not explicitly stated.

He changed all names of locations and persons.
Here just a selection:
Honorverse Green Dragon
---------- -------------
Manticore Mountserrat
Haven Harbouria
Solarian League Sol
Admiral Raoul Courvosier Commodore Raoul Courtney
Landing Settlement
Gryphon Griffin
?? Gorgipest
Admiral Lady Sonja Hemphill Admiral Dame Diana Halliday

I've read all books of Weber's Honorverse and I tried to read Green Dragons Aggy Book 1, but every time I read one of his changed names I tried to correlate it to the 'real' name. Without knowing if a name is unique to Green Dragon's fanfic or a renaming of a Honorverse name it was frustrating. Add to it that like 'Gorgipest' I knew what was meant but couldn't remember the Honorverse name.
I finally stopped reading 'Aggy'.

HM.

Grrr, the system ate my tabs, tried blanks instead.

Oyster50's Smart Girls:
Starting with 3 seemingly independent stories Christina, Cindy, and Nikki, which interweave (Christina Ch.15 โ€” Cindy Ch.34: meeting in Charlotte; Jason moving from Cindy about Ch.43 to Christina Ch.20; Christina Ch.32 โ€” Nikki Ch.17: resuming lost contact; Cindy Ch.56: call from Tina to tell her about Nikki). Sequels are Community, Community Too, Community Three Sigma, Community Four(ever), Community Moving On.
Other story lines from the Smart Girls universe connect to the main story line of the Community and either run parallel (Neighbors โ€“ Bill 'N' Haley โ€“ Bill and Haley and Deena โ€“ Haley's Bunch) or get absorbed by one of the two main story lines (Melodic Redemption, Dana, Kimberly 2.0, mi Vida, Nina, Sunny, Tommy).

Together it's quite epic.

I'll put in a word for my own Variation on a Theme series, which has passed a million words thus far (and has a long ways to go).

Not yet mentioned is Bluedragon's Ordinary Sex Life series (somewhere around 3 million, I think, and there are some other stories set in the same universe with occasionally intersecting characters as well).

Mushroom ๐Ÿšซ

@octavion55

One of mine is almost insanely long. It topped out at around 1.4 million words, just for the first 3 main "books". And has also spun off a lot of stand-alone stories.

https://storiesonline.net/s/17259/country-boy-city-girl

It is a very long-form coming of age story, taking place from roughly 1982 to 1994. And while there is a fair amount of sex, ultimately it is about a young man's journey into and through his early adulthood.

With a lot of pop culture thrown in around the era.

Michael Loucks ๐Ÿšซ

@octavion55

My A Well-Lived Life universe has 13.2 million words:

A Well-Lived Life - 9.5 million
Good Medicine - 3.2 million
Climbing the Ladder - 0.5 million

The main series is an epic coming-of-age series spanning 30+ years so far, and the MC's kids become their own narrators in the 3rd AWLL series.

You're welcome. The third series has much more focus on the kids and they narrate a good chunk of the story (more as series 3 progresses).

A long, good story that is pretty futuristic is the Demigod of War story, but it unfortunately not completed. The protagonist travels across realities and fights a variety of threats, very interesting.

A universe to check out is the Anthony Carter Series, set in the early 1800s onwards and full of naval life in the British empire during the time. Very good, and the series has many characters to it.
