Glenn—I met Mary my senior year. She had not gone to college and was working in a ‘big box store’ in the children’s department. We fell in love and decided to marry after I graduated. Everything went according to plan. I graduated, we married and took a short honeymoon then returned home to live in my apartment. Within a year Mary had found a better job as the receptionist at a lawyer’s office, and I was working as an IT specialist for a tech company. During our third year of marriage, we bought a house. I thought everything was fine between us. That is why I was so surprised when I came home one day to find three suitcases sitting by the front door. Mary asked me to come into the kitchen. I sat at the table while she explained she was in love with another! I wanted to know who it was. “Paul Stubs,”
“That old fart you work for?”
“No, of course not. His son, Paul Jr. He passed his bar exam and came to work at the firm about six months ago. It was love at first sight for both of us. I can’t describe how he makes me feel. I get chills just thinking about him. When we make love, he takes me to places I have never been. I’m sorry but I am not going to lie to you anymore. We have been taking long lunches at his apartment since the day I met him. Some nights you got sloppy seconds. But that’s all over. He has filled out the papers for our divorce, and you will be served tomorrow. I have already signed them. Don’t worry, I do not want anything from you. The house and everything that’s in it is yours. Paul and I are leaving tonight for a two-week vacation. I need to hurry. I want you to know that I did love you. Take care.”
She turned and walked out the front door.
I sat in the kitchen for a long time trying to figure out what had just happened and WHY!
The next afternoon I was served with the divorce papers. It was exactly like she said. No alimony, her part of the house was signed over to me as was all the furniture. She even let me have the little we had in a savings account. Ninety days passed then one day I woke up and I was divorced. I never talked to Mary or saw her around town. About six months later a job opportunity came up. I sold the house and most of the furniture, then moved to another state and started a new life.
