Lin Wan’s alarm was set for 7:40. She woke up at 7:30 anyway.

Day three.

Day one, the alarm had gone off and she’d basically rolled off the bed onto her knees, cracked her knee on the bed frame, and taken the photo sideways. Day two she’d woken up ten minutes early and felt absurdly pleased with herself — which, kneeling on your bedroom floor at seven in the morning feeling pleased with yourself, is a weird thing. But there it was.

Today she just lay in the duvet for a minute, staring at the ceiling. Her body had learned the routine faster than her head had. Her knees basically had their own calendar now. Rude, honestly.

The floor was freezing. October. She stood up too fast, got head-rush, grabbed the bed frame.

She knelt on the rug. Same beige rug from college, worn thin in the middle exactly where her knees always landed. Back straight — straight-ish. Knees together, hands on her thighs. Day one she’d looked like she was proposing to the furniture. She’d improved.

Photo: knees, a bit of calf, rug. No face — rule three, non-negotiable. She checked it (straight this time) and sent it.

“Morning, Master. Your pup is awake. Kneeling. Requesting a morning head pat.”

Then the wait. Usually about two minutes. Downstairs the breakfast stall was opening up — soy milk smell, the shutter clanking. She counted her breaths and got to forty before the buzz.

“Morning, pup.”

Two words. She mashed her forehead into the duvet and grinned.

“Sleep well?” he asked.

“Very well. You weren’t in the dream, Master. Your pup slept on her own.”

“Honesty makes a good pup. Temperature’s dropping today. Wear an extra layer. Eat breakfast — I’ll be checking tonight.”

“Copy that.” Saluting emoji.

“Today’s word is ‘settle.’ When you’re slacking off at work thinking of me, say it once in your head. Then get back to it.”

She said it in her head: settle. Typed it back: “Got it. Settle.”

“Go. Don’t be late.”

“Your pup’s off.”

She stood up — knees all pins-and-needles — and had to stamp her feet on the cold floor for a bit, which hurt and helped at the same time. Brushing her teeth, foam everywhere, she caught herself in the mirror. She looked better than last week, actually. The grey smudges under her eyes had faded. No idea why. Maybe — weird thought to have with toothpaste foam on her chin — maybe because somebody was catching her mornings now. No more three alarms and sprinting out the door. Somebody at the other end of 7:30.
