My cousin Mica was back in town. She had been away at university for the past 5 years and was now coming back into general circulation. She wanted to visit old friends, and as her mum and dad had moved to be near her university in Birmingham, she was going to stay in a hotel in town. She had sent me a rambling text telling me all this and wondered if we could meet up for a meal.

Mica and I had been inseparable as we grew up; living just a few streets apart, we went to the same schools and played together evenings and weekends. She had been pretty much a tomboy, always in jeans or trousers, never dresses or skirts, and then she went to university in Birmingham, and I went to Leeds, and we just kind of grew apart, and that was that.

After Mica had left, I started having girlfriends – some serious, most not, one broke my heart, a few others did, and Mica moved further to the back of my mind, but always in my memories, even if towards the back of them. I would occasionally wonder what Mica would think of or about something, but never of someone. Mica had never been on my radar as a girlfriend; she was simply my cousin.

I agreed to meet Mica in the White Hart at seven, I ordered an Uber, and I would no doubt be drinking and didn’t want to leave my car in town if, or rather when, I got an Uber back home. I showered and put on a crisp white cotton shirt, silk boxers for comfort as it was a warm day, and green chinos. Brown loafers and I was done. Wallet, keys and phone in my manbag, and I was ready.

I heard a car horn and opened my door; it was the Uber. I locked the house, and soon we were on our way into Bingley town, a journey of just a few minutes. I got the Uber to drop me off on the main road, and I walked the last few paces to the pub. The river weir was as noisy as ever, drowning all the voices coming from the outdoor terrace. I could see people, and they were talking, but I could not make out their words, only the roar of the weir.

Two hands snaked around my head and covered my eyes. “Hello, you,” the unmistakable voice of Mica said. Even after all these years I recognised her voice instantly. “Glad to see you haven’t changed, I recognised you instantly. “Let’s sit by the water.”

Her hands moved away, and I turned and looked into the eyes of Mica, how she had changed. Gone was the tomboy of my youth, and in front of me stood a beautiful woman, with blond hair tied in a high pony, a full figure barely hidden by a simple red dress, heels, stockings, and couture that was no longer denim jeans and trainers but now topped with perfect cosmetics.

“Well, I can hardly say the same for you, the woman in you has appeared, but I would still recognise you anywhere. “Hello, Mica,” I said and leant forwards and gave her a brief kiss before standing back for another look. She had certainly grown up.

“Oh, the woman was always there,” she said. “Let’s sit at that table there, and we can talk and catch up.”

“Perhaps she was, and perhaps I wasn’t looking; gosh, a blind man would have seen more than me.”

“No, those times were different; they were formative, they were fun, there were no complications, and I love those memories.”

“You know, I think you are right; we did have fun, didn’t we?”

“Yes, now, what shall we eat?”

“The steak here is good; they had a wobble a few years ago, but now, it is really good. I think they changed their supplier, or perhaps the boss simply reigned things in, I don’t know. I had an awful experience here once and complained, but privately, not publicly. Anyway, next time I went, it was all sorted.”

“Were you bringing one of your lady friends?”

“I may have been.”

“Have there been many?”

“Maybe, but then, too few to mention.”

I went in and ordered and got a bottle of house red for us to drink and also asked for a jug of water to go with it. Back outside I was again amazed at how good she looked. I mean, she wasn’t exactly an ugly duckling, but my God, in our youth there had never been even a hint of femininity. To be fair, I wasn’t exactly a lothario in my youth, and I doubt I would have noticed even if there had been.

As I sat down, a server came out with the wine and two glasses and explained that the water would follow. I poured Mica a glass of wine, and then I poured mine, and I raised my glass.

“Cheers,” I said.

“Good health,” Mica replied as she clinked my glass. “So, current girlfriend?”

“Sort of.”

“What in the hell does that mean? ‘Sort of?’” Her eyes piercing and her mouth firm, it was as if I had said just exactly the wrong thing.

“Well, I am seeing Svetlana, but it isn’t really working out, so I am going to end it; I just haven’t quite yet.”

“Why? What is wrong? Why isn’t it working out?”

“Well, it is a bit personal to be honest.”

“Oh, come on, Paul, we grew up together; we have no secrets, no embarrassments, and there is nothing too personal that we cannot share.” Her mouth softened, and her head tilted a little to one side, her ponytail waving gently.

“You are right. She is nice, well, more than nice. We have fun when we go out, we laugh at the same things and get annoyed at the same things.”

“Oh, I got it. When you said ‘nice’, that is an awful thing to be described as. No woman wants her boyfriend to be nice, oh no, nor does she want her boyfriend to think of her as nice. God, that is a terrible word; it should be expunged.”

“Well, there you are then, so I need to finish with her and let her go and find a better boyfriend.”

“Oh no, you are not getting off that easy.”

I was about to answer when the server delivered our starters. I had gone for paté and Mica had gone for calamari. I busied myself with slithers of toast as Mica skewered battered bits of squid onto her fork. The weir gurgled and splashed as the water, at a relatively low level due to the low rainfall recently, flowed over and onto the rockier outfall side on its way downstream.

We didn’t talk as we ate, and the food was good, the paté was exceedingly smooth, almost like spreading velvet on my toast, and the toasted bread, a proper crusty white, not the populist sourdough so beloved by trendy establishments, the toasting at just the right level, not a hint of carbonisation, just a beautiful brown toasting.

“That was good,” Mica said as she put her fork down, her plate empty. A flash of blue in my eye as a kingfisher flew down the river briefly distracting me, and then the deep blue of Mica’s eyes dragged back to the present. I smiled at her.

“Yes, I have had the calamari here, and I found it good, and I have to say that the paté was divine.”

“Now, finish explaining about the nice poor Svetlana.”

“Do you remember that song by Lily Allen, you know, the one about her boyfriend?”

“No, which one?”

“Unfair it was called, I think, about his inability in the bedroom.”

“Oh yes, I do now; that was a while ago.”

“Well, anyway, Svetlana is a bit like that in the bedroom; she sort of lies there and lets me get on with it, no interaction if you know what I mean.”

“Well, no, not really, but okay, no sexual fireworks then?”

“No, not even a damp squib.”

“And that is important, is it?”

“Heck yes, isn’t that important to you?”

“Well, no, not really, I don’t know.”

“You don’t know? How can you not know?”

And then the server came and cleared our plates and asked if we wanted another bottle of wine. Without realising it we had gone through the first bottle, I answered yes and then turned back to Mica.

“Well?” I asked again.

She shrugged and smiled and finished her glass of wine, her finger absentmindedly running around the rim of her empty glass as she looked at me. As much as I thought I knew Mica, I was beginning to think that perhaps I didn’t know her at all. Had we grown up together and not known each other? I was beginning to feel a little out of my depth; I was the wrong side of the weir.

The server returned with our steaks. Simply presented, seared and placed to one side of the plate, a small collection of thick golden chips to one side and a grilled half of tomato. None of those ridiculous collections of leaves that so often get thrown onto a plate. It looked utterly delightful. I cut a piece and put it into my mouth. The flavour was exactly what it should be, and there was no toughness; it was excellent-quality, perfectly cooked.

Another bottle of wine arrived, and after the server had refilled our glasses, we were once more alone with each other and our food. We concentrated on eating our steaks; they were superb, and delaying them would not do the chef any justice. As I ate the last piece of meat, I looked across at Mica; she was just taking her last piece, and we had finished simultaneously.

“Well,” I said, “as good and as distracting as that steak was, you ignored my question.”

“Oh, that was ages ago; we’ve moved on since then.”

“Have we indeed? Okay, tell me about your boyfriend.”

“Oh, that is easy; I don’t have one,” she replied, smiling.

“Girlfriend?”

“Oh, don’t be daft.”

“Okay, the last boyfriend that you had – tell me about him.”

“I haven’t got one; I haven’t had one.”

“What? No boyfriend ever, all the way through uni, and you haven’t had a boyfriend. I find that difficult to believe.”

“Why, why is that so difficult?”

“Well, I mean, look, you are bloody gorgeous. I cannot believe that boys were not attracted to you, that they didn’t ask you out.”

“Oh, plenty asked; I just always said no, and no to the girls too. Eventually they stopped asking, and I managed to get on with my studies.”

I looked at her again; I could see no hint of a wink, nothing to suggest that she was teasing me. I could hardly believe what I was hearing.

“Okay, wow, just wow, so, you’ve never? You know, have you been with anyone?”

“No. Yes, I am a virgin if that is what you are asking, and so back to your earlier question, and that is why I did not have any knowledge or understanding of what you called ‘interaction’.”

“Oh, okay, sorry, I didn’t mean to push you into uncomfortable territory.”

She laughed and leant back in her chair, her wine glass at her lips, draining her glass. She put the glass on the table, and then, leaning forwards, she took my hand.

“You don’t embarrass me; you have never embarrassed me. For me, this is not uncomfortable territory with you.”

“Oh. Okay, well, if I may ask, why not? Any particular reason?”

“Just the right man was never there at the right moment, the man, if you like, of my dreams.”

“Oh, so, it is not that you didn’t want to; you just never met the right man.”

She waved her empty wine glass at me, and I filled her glass, pouring the last of the wine into my glass. We had managed to get rid of two bottles of red wine between us. I was expecting to feel it more, but I couldn’t really notice it, but it was a good job that the car had been left at home. I was at that dangerous stage, not fit to drive but feeling the opposite.

“Oh, I never said I hadn’t met him.”

“Okay, oh well.” I didn’t know what to say to that and decided that stopping the subject at that point was probably a good idea. I could never read women, and if she was saying something to me subliminally, it was well lost in my failure to translate.

We decided against deserts, a starter and a main being enough for both of us. The question of coffee came up.

“My hotel is just up the road,” Mica said, “walking distance. Walk me back and have a coffee with me there.”

“Okay, yes, that will be nice. Be good to get away from the sound of water too; it makes me want the loo all the time.”

“I know what you mean,” she laughed.

We went into the pub and used the toilets and then walked back slowly up the main street to her hotel, the effects of the wine slowly becoming more pronounced. I don’t know what I had expected, sitting somewhere downstairs and ordering coffee probably, but that, it turned out, wasn’t what she meant. As we walked in, she went straight to the lifts, and we went up to the second floor.

In the lift Mica rummaged through her bag and pulled out a room card key, and as we walked along the hotel corridor, she stopped at room 203 and used her card to open the door, holding it open for me to enter.

“Loo is just there if you are still feeling the effects of the river,” she said, pointing to the door that led to the bathroom. “I’ll put the kettle on. You can have coffee or hot chocolate; I drank all the tea earlier.”

“Yes, I will use the loo,” I answered, “and a coffee is fine, thank you.”

I went into the bathroom, and after I had finished and washed my hands, I walked back into the main room. Mica was just finishing the coffee.

“We’ll have to sit on the bed,” she said. “Here’s your coffee. I am just going to nip to the loo.”

I took the coffee and sat on the bed, legs outstretched, leaning back against the headboard with pillows behind me. Mica came back in and looked at me and laughed, “Comfy?” She asked.

“Yes, and the coffee is good too.”

She put her hands behind her back, and I heard the sound of a zip being undone. I looked quizzically at her.

“This dress was three hundred in a sale; I am not going to ruin it by creasing it on the bed. You can shut your eyes if you want,” she said, laughing. Her dress slipped off her shoulders, and she stepped out of it and walked to the wardrobe and hung it up. My eyes were not on the dress; they were most definitely on Mica.

Her lingerie was a powder blue colour, bra and knickers in a sheer lace. Her stockings were hold-ups; no suspender belt needed. When she turned around, I had to suppress a gulp; her breasts were virtually exposed, the bra cup was sheer and hardly covered them. They were not huge, probably a C cup, but beautifully round and firmly high on her chest. She was no longer the tomboy I played with.

She grabbed her coffee and came and sat next to me and pressed her side against me, not exactly snuggling, but certainly no distance maintained.

“So,” she said, “Svetlana?”

“Yes.”

“You are definitely going to finish with her?”

“Yes, I would have done it this evening, but I had a more important engagement.”

“Only, I would never date someone who is spoken for.”

“Oh?”

“No, I would suggest sending her a text to do it now, but that would be cruel; you need to do it face-to-face; it is only right.”

“Er, okay, it is done, all but the words.” My mind was struggling to assimilate her words, to take her unspoken meaning.

“But I have no problem with kissing someone, you know, in advance, so to speak, prior to any formal situation evolving.”

“Oh.”

“So, what are you waiting for?” She asked, turning her head to me.

Her face was next to mine, our lips barely apart, I leant forward, and contact was made. She sighed, and her hand rested on my chest, mine on her bare stomach. My tongue traced the outline of her purse, tasting her, inhaling her aroma.

“I want to send a text,” I mumbled into her lips.

“I dare say, but no, you must do it properly, face to face,” she mumbled back and then her lips pressed harder against mine, her tongue hot and wet sliding into my mouth.

I got to my knees and straddled her; holding her face in my hands, I kissed her gently, my lips on hers, and then on her cheeks, and then on her nose and her forehead before returning to her mouth. My hand was just beneath her breast; I was unsure if I dared move up. In truth, I was unsure of what was actually happening.

“Won’t your shirt and trousers get creased?”

“I suppose they might, but I don’t want to move away and lose this moment,” I replied in between kisses.

“The moment will not be lost; I am going nowhere,” she whispered softly. I unstraddled and got off the bed, looking intently at her face, trying to fix her features into my memory in case this was a moment that would be lost. I undid the buttons of my shirt and pulled it off, folding it and placing it over the back of the solitary chair in the room.

I undid my trousers and eased them off, doing the one-footed dance as I removed my feet from each leg, adding my folded trousers to the back of the chair. I returned to the bed and once more straddled Mica and leant forwards to kiss her.

“Do you recall what I said by the river?” She asked.

“I recall everything. What did you say in particular?”

“About my not knowing about your bedroom issues with Svetlana.”

“Yes, of course.”

“Well, what are the implications of that?”

“That you are inexperienced in these matters.”

“Utterly, I may prove to be a great disappointment.”

“You have never disappointed me in my life, but I am unsure as to why what is happening is happening; I am afraid I may take the wrong steps.”

“I also did not say I had not met the right man,” she added, my brain trying to navigate its way through the double negatives.

“No, I mean, yes,” I said, my brain still struggling to come to terms with the situation.

“You have stopped kissing me,” she pointed out. I remedied the situation.

My hand was once more resting on her abdomen; she gently put her hand around it and lifted my hand up so that I was cupping her breast. Oh, the electricity that flowed through my fingers as I gripped her nipple, which grew and hardened as I held it, her breast weighty in my hand, perhaps more than a C. I was no expert in these matters.

As I massaged her breast, her hand, now free from directing traffic, found itself in my lap, and her fingers curled around my rapidly hardening dick. My dick twitched, and I gasped with pleasure.

“Have I hurt you?” She asked between kisses, relaxing her hold.

“Good grief, no, far from it,” I answered, and she squeezed my dick again, and again I gasped with pleasure. I reached behind her back and found the clasp to her bra; a quick move of my fingers and it was undone, falling forward a little, still caught by the straps around her shoulders.

I eased each strap down onto her arms and then pulled it forwards, Mica lifting the hand holding my dick so that the bra could be released. I turned my eyes and looked at her breasts; they were magnificent, beautifully rounded, with nipples front and central, hard bullets awaiting my attention.

I bent down and sucked her left nipple into my mouth, gently chewing it, more massaging it with my teeth and tongue than actually chewing. She put her hand inside my boxers, pushing down past the waistband, her fingernails slightly sharp as she held my dick, squeezing it, her inexperience showing.

“Wow, I didn’t know how it would feel; it is soft on the outside yet really hard inside. It is incredible.”
