I read somewhere that the 8th of August was National Women’s Orgasm day and I got to thinking...

Nobody in the village of Marrow-on-the-Wold could say for certain how the tradition began, only that every year on the eighth of August the church bell rang at noon for no reason the vicar would admit to, and by sundown not a single woman in the parish would meet your eye without smiling like she knew something you didn’t.

Wenna Pascoe knew exactly how it began, because it had begun with her grandmother, and her grandmother had been a woman of appetite and no patience whatsoever.

“Once a year,” Gran had told her, the summer Wenna turned twenty and began looking at the blacksmith’s forearms the way a cat looks at cream, “the world owes a woman one good afternoon that’s entirely her own. Not the husband’s, not the children’s, not the bread’s nor the beasts’. Hers. And if the world won’t give it, my girl, you go and take it.”

Wenna had taken the advice to heart. She had also, that particular year, taken rather a liking to Tam the miller’s son, who had a slow smile and clever hands and a way of filling out a sweat-damp shirt that made her thighs press together when she thought about it too long — which was often.

So on the eighth of August, when the bell rang out across the barley and the whole village seemed to exhale at once, Wenna put on the good green dress with nothing at all beneath it, tucked a sprig of honeysuckle behind her ear, and went walking down the lane toward the mill.

She found Tam in the yard, shirtsleeves rolled, hauling sacks of flour with the sort of unhurried strength that made her mouth go dry and other parts of her considerably wetter. He looked up. He saw the dress, and the shape of her moving loose and unbound beneath it. He dropped the sack.

“Wenna,” he said, in the voice of a man who has forgotten every other word he ever knew.

“Tam,” she said sweetly. “You look warm. You ought to come inside where it’s cool.”

The mill was cool, and dim, and smelled of grain and river water, and the great wheel turned somewhere below with a low patient rush that made the whole building hum like a struck bell. Wenna leaned back against a rough wooden post in the half-dark and watched Tam try very hard to remember how to breathe.

“It’s the eighth,” she said.

“So it is,” he managed.

“Do you know what that means?”

He shook his head. Poor lamb — the men never did know. That was rather the point.

“It means,” said Wenna, crossing the floor to him with the unhurried certainty of a woman who has decided, “that today, Tam-of-the-mill, you’re going to do exactly as I tell you. And you’re going to be very good at it. Can you do that?”

He swallowed hard enough to hear. “I’ll do my best.”

“Your best,” she murmured against his jaw, “is what I’m counting on.”

She kissed him then, slow and filthy and thorough, one hand fisted in his shirt and the other sliding down the warm plane of his belly until his breath stuttered. She felt him go rigid — felt, when she pressed her hips to his, exactly how hard and how ready he already was, thick against her through the rough cloth of his breeches. She rolled against it, deliberately, and swallowed the groan it wrung out of him.

“You can hold a woman like you mean it,” she told him, dragging his big hands up to her breasts. “I shan’t break.”

He meant it after that. His palms closed over her through the thin green cloth, thumbs finding her nipples and rubbing until they stood up hard and aching, and Wenna arched into it with a hum of pure approval and reached down to pull the dress up over her head in one motion, so she stood bare in the grain-dust and the slatted light with nothing on but the honeysuckle behind her ear.
