In the minutes before waking, I dreamt of offering Laura a peanut butter and apple slice sandwich. While I didn’t make the sandwich in the dream, upon waking I told Laura what I’d dreamt and asked her if she’d like me to make her a peanut butter and apple slice sandwich. “That’s very sweet of you, but no thank you,” she said, and it being Sunday morning, she rolled back to sleep.

I got out of bed, belatedly realizing it was barely six o’clock. The sun gets up so early these days. I went to the kitchen, fetched an apple from the refrigerator, and washed it. Then I sliced it into thin slices, arranged the slices on one of two pieces of lightly toasted multi-grain bread, and I spread peanut butter on another slice of bread. I pressed the slices together and took a bite.
