Davy sat there against the brick wall of his bedroom, his pizza forgotten on the plate as he smacked his head against the stucco walls to get the tears to stop. His mind was racing in a million directions, and he felt himself crashing into another pool of despair. Grabbing his pillow, he curled up in the corner and cried for a normal life, a life without all the pain, hopelessness, confusion and loneliness he suffered from. His last thought as he finally fell asleep was about the new treatment and he prayed it might help him finally achieve a normal life.

Davy yearned for a normal life, a life with a happy family, one with his father back to take care of his mother and to teach him how to camp and have fun. Suddenly a pounding on the front door shattered his dreams. Jerking awake, he looked at the clock, it was just a little after one am on Sunday morning. Confused, he staggered to his feet as he heard the front door go down and he grabbed his cell phone off the desk. Opening it up, he quickly dialed 911 for help.

"911 how may I help you?"

"Yes, someone is breaking into our home. My mom is at work, I am all alone," he whispered.

"Sir, I am dispatching a unit now, please stay on the line. What is your name?"

"Davy Woods and I will try..."

"Where the hell is the bitch? She better have my money," said the voice from somewhere outside his door.

The sound of another door being broken down and then the sound of the footsteps came closer. Then his bedroom door banged as someone hit the steel door he had installed to prevent his mother from selling his belongings for booze.

"What the hell is this? Fort Knox?" said the voice.

Davy now knew whom the voice belonged to. It is his mother's dope dealer.

"Go away, there's no money here," he shouted.

"Listen up kid, open the door and give me what's mine or so help me, you will regret it."

"All I have is $20.00 and you're not getting that, that's my lunch money!" Davy snapped back at the door.

"Sir, calm down, don't aggravate him, he could hurt you," came the voice from the 911 operator.

"He has to get though my door first and that will be a job for him... " Suddenly a muffled shot rings out, and a hole appears in the door. Davy dives to the floor behind the bed, "Shit! He's got a gun! Hurry up," he said into the phone.

"I am notifying the officers. Now they are outside your building. Try and stay calm."

Terry Hawkins lifted the silenced pistol again and started to fire when he noticed the flashing blue lights in the window. Moving to the window, he saw two pigs climbing out of their car, turned he ran out the door, and raced down the one flight of stairs.

"Fucking brat, I am going to kill him. No I am going to kill his slut mother," he said as he watched the cops go up the landing. Tucking the pistol inside his coat, he went down the remaining two flights and out the back door of the apartment building.

Officer Rudy Gallon looked up at the crummy looking apartment complex and shook his head. "I hate these old buildings."

"Yeah I know you do, but let's get in there," replied Officer Shannon Jones as she pulled out her pistol and flashlight.

Entering the building, they quietly advanced up the stairs to the third floor. At the end of the hallway, they saw the door was broken down. Moving into the apartment, they looked in and saw no one. With weapons raised, they stepped in and scanned to the left and right.

"Clear in the living room," reported Officer Gallon as he moved around the couch.

"Clear in the kitchen," replied Shannon as she moved to the hallway and saw one door down, and another door still up at the end of the hall.

Davy listened to the conversation and said into the phone, "I can hear people talking in the living room. I think it's the police."

"Yes it is Davy. Now I want you to announce yourself and unlock the door for them and sit on your bed."

"Ok, thank you," he said gratefully as he ended the call placing the cell phone down on his desk.

Unlocking the door, he turned and sat on the bed as he was told to do. Within seconds, the door was open and he looked into the face of two police officers. They scanned the room and put their weapons away.

Shannon looked at the kid who couldn't have been be more then sixteen years old, and said, "Davy Woods?"

"Yes Ma'am, my ID is on my desk beside you."

Picking up the wallet, she flipped it open and compared the picture in it, "Okay Davy, what's this all about?"

"I don't know. Some guy broke in here, I recognized the voice, I have heard him down at the corner at the mini-mart, and he wanted money that was owed to him. I think he had the wrong apartment."

"Where are your parents Davy?" asked Officer Gallon as he came back to the room.

"My dad? Who knows? He skipped out on us ten years ago. We have not heard a word since on him. Mom is at work down at the Save-a-Lot, stocking the store. She gets off in four hours, and will be home by six am."

"Ok Davy, we are going to dispatch a police offer to your mom's work, is there anyplace you can go?"

Davy thought for a second, "I don't think so ... wait maybe, let me call my friend Cindy." Grabbing his cell phone, he hit the speed dial.

Rebecca lifted the last can of soup up on the shelf, looked at her watch, and saw it was break time. Grabbing the empty flat boxes, she tossed them into the shopping cart as she walked towards the backroom. Passing her boss Tim Alderwoods she said, "Hey Tim, I am going out back for a cigarette."

"Ok Becca, I will be out as soon as I finish this box, I could use one too," replied Tim as he placed several jars of pickles on the shelf.

Going to her locker, Rebecca opened it and grabbed her cigarettes and lighter. Placing them in her pocket, she opened her purse, pulled out the little flask, and took a sip of the gin it contained and sighed. Closing the flask she tucked it away, closed, and locked her locker. Walking over to the coffee pot, she got herself a cup and then went out the backdoor. As the door closed behind her, she set the cup down on the small table. The cool night air felt good on her skin as she lit the cigarette. Inhaling the smoke, she reached for the cup of coffee to get another drink when a voice startled her.

"Bitch, the boss wants his money," snarled a voice from the darkness.

Jerking her head around, she looked into the face of one of Terry Hawkins' enforcers Jim Acorn, as he walked into the pale light from the bug zappers, and she snarled, "Tell Terry I am paid up. He said if I got that senator in bed I wouldn't owe anymore. Well I did, and he got the tape. I am not worried..."

Jim stepped over and slapped the woman shutting her up.

The slap caught her off guard and she went ballistic on him. Clawing and slapping the man, she flew backwards and landed next to the table when he punched her again. Grabbing a broken beer bottle, she flew back at the man and started trying to cut him up.

Jim blocked the woman's attacks and he felt a sharp pain as the bottle sliced his hand.

"Bitch that hurt," he said.

"Good! I am going to gouge your eyes out you son of a bitch," Rebecca snarled.

Dodging a quick jab at his face, Jim jumped back and went down over an empty pallet. Landing on his back, he looked up at the woman coming at him, yanked his pistol out of his holster, and fired two rounds into the woman's chest.

Rebecca flew backwards when the bullets hit her chest and she landed by the table, she laid there looking up in to the night sky as she gasped in pain, "Davy ... I love you, I am sorry I treated you like sh... " Her voiced faded out as her eyes closed.

Over at the Jameson residence, Mike Jameson was just coming in the door from working at the firm all night, when the phone rang. Looking at the caller ID, he was surprised that it was Davy Woods. "Davy, why are you calling at this hour?" he said after picking up the phone.

"Hi Mr. Jameson... " before he can continue the police officer's walkie-talkies squealed and started calling in some report.

"Davy, is that the police there?" asked Mike in concern, because he liked the sixteen year old freckled boy. However, he could not stand his mother. He thought she was a slut, and a boozer. Mike had no use for anyone who got into booze.

"Yes Sir, someone tried... " Davy stopped talking when the woman spoke to him.

Sharron felt the blood rush from her face as she heard the report of the shooting at the Save-a-Lot. Quickly turning down her radio, she nodded her head to her partner. "Rudy, check that out for me." Turning back to Davy, she watched him talk on the phone, and said, "Davy, can I talk with your friend?"
