It was a week after the semester ended. I sat nervously in Principal Brecker's office across from her desk. Cat sat with me. While Skylar, Meaghan, and Aimee would give me fantastic reviews, I had no idea what the other freshmen girls would say or what the girls from any of my other classes would write. They seemed to like my teaching style and I thought they had fun but when it came right down to it, there was no way to predict.
Brecker began, "Catherine talked to me a couple of weeks before the semester ended."
It took me a second to realize Brecker was talking about Cat. I forgot she was officially Catherine.
Brecker said, "She has high praise for you in the way you teach and from what I have seen, the students like you. Despite all that, as you are aware this is an all-girls school and I am of the mind to not retain you."
My face dropped.
"But..." protested Cat.
Brecker put her hand up shutting off Cat. She picked up a paper from her desk that I recognized as an evaluation form.
She read, "Mr. Cooper is an awesome teacher. I wish he was the science teacher the whole time I was at school here, Virginia."
Virginia? Virginia? She was in my senior Biology class. She didn't say much and looked like she was bored. I owed her.
Brecker picked up another one. "Chemistry is way cool! I hated science the first two years. Mr. Cooper is super duper, Chelsie."
I couldn't help but smile at the rhyme. I liked Chelsie too. She was a good, attentive student.
"From your Physics class," said Brecker. "I didn't know that science was cool. Mr. Cooper is awesome. I hope he stays here forever. I want to take all my classes with him, Susan."
Damn! Either the students really liked me or Carolyn, the dead and previous teacher, was already so dead when she taught that it made me look really good.
