Back at the Front, Frank became depressed. The war was going badly and there were rumors of revolution in Russia. It was cold. He felt fortunate to have a bed to sleep in. However without Yvette, he was lonely. Although there were good companions at dinner with his fellow staff members, he still felt out of place. Strange how one woman could change his view on life.
He sent two important letters. The first was to Grace releasing her from all obligations toward him. He said he didn't think he would survive the war. Which was a lie, of course. The second was to General French asking for a Paris posting in the British Embassy. He did not give the motive of such a move. He expected the general to read between the lines. John French could not read between lines. To him, he wanted facts, plain and simple. The next morning Frank was called on the carpet.
"What is this nonsense about an embassy posting in Paris," French asked.
"Just as it says, sir," the words stumbled out of Frank's mouth. He was standing easy in front of French's desk.
"Don't you know that I am planning an operation which would hopefully end this war? I can't just grant favors to anyone who won't play it straight with me. I want the real reason you wanting to be posted in Paris."
"Um, sir. I don't know if this is a good enough reason in your eyes but it makes perfect sense to me. I am not an asset to your staff. I don't contribute anything like the other officers..."
"Dammit Major, tell me the real reason you want tranferred out of my command," French pounded the desk with his fist.
"I met a woman, sir. Not any woman, but the one I wish to marry and have children with. She is very loving, sweet, and beautiful. She is unlike anyone I have ever met. A free spirit."
"Does she love you?"
"Yes, sir," Frank stated emphatically.
French let out a loud raucous laugh. "I am being transferred out and being relieved by that bastard General Haig. It will be a kick in the pants if I grant all you who have asked for a new posting elsewhere. I'll give you what you have requested. Not because of your woman, but because Haig will have no staff when he takes control in a month." He stamped his approval. "You'll have to get your posting yourself. I don't want it traced back to me."
"Yes sir," Frank felt both excited and how much of an asshole French was. He had caused over one hundred thousand deaths by the two infamous Battles of Ypres. But he wasn't going to ruffle his feathers. Yvette was far more important to him than to risk not getting a posting at the Embassy in Paris.
Grace read the letter releasing her from all obligations to him. It said that he feared he might not survive the war and it would be a waste of her time if another man courted her. Reading between the lines, she believed that it had to be a woman that he had met in Paris or elsewhere. She knew of Gwen being his bedmate and strangely it did not bother her. The man was thirty, in the prime of his life, and he had sexual feelings.
Grace took a piece of her stationary and wrote him back. She stated that she now realized that she loved him and wished for them to be married as soon as he returned from this war. She said she would take her chances and wait for him. If he were killed, that was God's will and she would accept it. If he were hurt, she would move mountains to take care of him and nurse him back to health. If he were crippled for life, she would take care of his every need.
Grace smiled upon reading her letter to Frank, knowing she was backing him into a corner. He now had to show his true intentions. He would certainly have to return to New York since his fortune was here. And she would waiting for him.
