Waking the next morning was a test of strength for Gabriel; all night his sleep had been plagued with nightmares and dreams. Dreams so real he would have sworn they were actually happening. He hoped that everything that had happened yesterday was a dream and that he would wake up normal and without the telekinesis. To that end, he had placed a rubber ball across the room behind his door, rubber so he wouldn't hurt himself and across the room to put it beyond reach. Taking a deep breath, Gabriel concentrated on the ball and watched as it rose slowly and flew across the room into his hand, impacting with a resounding slap.
"Well there goes that hope," Gabriel said to himself, dropping the ball and rubbing his hand. "Why me? Why do I have this when other people more deserving should have it?" Getting out of bed, Gabriel had a shower before going downstairs for some breakfast. His motherwas already there eating.
"Hey, how was your night?" She asked him. Though she was always busy, she tried to connect to her son whenever she could, which was generally only in the mornings or a few nights of the week.
"It was ok. Like every other," Gabriel replied in as monotone a voice as he could. It seemed to work.
"Alright then. Well I'm off to work. I'm not sure when I am going to be finished so if I'm not home in time, eat dinner without me. See you later," she said, grabbing her bag and heading for the door.
"No problem," Gabriel called after her. He heard the door slam shut and her driving off, leaving him at home alone. Eating his breakfast quickly, he went back upstairs and got dressed, having only worn a robe after his shower, and packed his bag. Returning downstairs he walked to the door but was suddenly hit by a craving for an apple.
Reaching out to the kitchen, an apple flew from the bowel on the bench to his hand.
"I can get used to this," Gabriel said, closing the door behind him.
"Move it Jennifer if you want a lift to school," Jennifer's mother called up to her daughter. Upstairs, Jennifer was doing her hair.
"I'll be down in a minute. I'm almost done," Jennifer called back. Finishing her hair, she examined herself in mirror. "I'm going to need to have more colour put into my hair. The red is starting to shine through the brown again," She said to herself in the mirror. She grabbed her bag and hurried downstairs. Her mother looked at her before she grabbed her keys and walked out the door, Jennifer in tow.
Driving, Jennifer drifted in her thoughts. She could not figure out why she got that feeling yesterday. What was more confusing for her, was why was it caused by Gabriel.
"What is on your mind?" her mother asked, having noticed her daughter's confused gaze. Jennifer considerd what to say.
"Mum, have you ever had the feeling that something or someone was meant to have some effect on your life?" Jennifer asked.
"I might have an idea. What's this feeling like?" she asked.
"Well, it's like I can feel them, like where they are, if they are looking at me and when they are close, this feeling is really strong," Jennifer tried to explain.
"Sounds like someone is feeling some pretty strong feelings for someone," her mother joked. Receiving a stare in return, she continued, "No, I can't say as I've felt a feeling like that. It sounds like you might be describing love but you seem to think it's not."
"God, I hope it's not. Something is seriously wrong with me if it is. It's not, it can't be," Jennifer thought to herself. As if on cue, the feeling inside her appeared, causing Jennifer to look around for Gabriel. "Please let this be different," she pleaded. Up ahead, she spotted Gabriel walking to school and shrank down into the car to hide herself. Her mother noticed this and the boy walking along the side of the road. Looking in the mirror as she drove past, she sizes him up.
"Not bad. Certainly no model, but not bad at all," she commented silently. "I wonder if he is the one giving her these feelings. He isn't her usual type."
The rest of the trip passed silently. Jennifer was dropped off at school and her mother drove off to complete some errands.
The trip to school had been uneventful for Gabriel and first period Chemistry was interesting. They had started to learn about different forms of acid-base reactions. Jennifer was in this class as well. She had transferred in after the class had started but had managed to catch up all of the work. She sat directly across from Gabriel, which was very disconcerting for him. Every time he looked to the board, his eyes caught sight of her and he found it very difficult to break contact with her once he made it. It was very distracting.
Jennifer herself was also distracted. She was being overwhelmed by the feeling inside of her. She could feel every time Gabriel looked at her, and it was quite a lot.
"How am I ever going to get through this? Please let it not be love," Jennifer pleaded to herself. As if to answer her plea, the bell rang and Jennifer was out of the class before the teacher had a chance to dismiss them.
"That was strange," Gabriel thought, as he packed his stuff and headed for Software Design.
As he had already done the work, Gabriel decided to see if he could find out what had caused the network problems. With his sudden departure the previous afternoon, he had not finished working on the problem and so used his time t o work on that.
