Returning home from running some errands, Emma opened the door to the mud room. Warm, welcoming aromas wafting in from the kitchen.
“Oh, Daniel!” she exclaimed. “What are you making? It smells wonderful!”
“Oh, hi, Emma. I didn’t expect you home so soon. Done with your Christmas shopping?”
Shedding her winter coat, Emma stepped into the kitchen. She’d expected something of a mess, but there was Daniel at the sink, washing the bowls and utensils he had used in making the house smell so wonderful, and on the clean counter behind him, a plate of cookies. She imagined steam rising from them.
“What have you been up to?” she asked as Daniel turned to her, wiping his hands.
“Well, to be honest, I just wanted to surprise you with some homemade chocolate kiss cookies. It was fun! Want to try one?”
“Of course,” she said. He picked up the plate and held it before her. She selected a cookie and took a delicate bite. Her face turned into a bright smile.
