It was late morning in Seattle, but early afternoon on Aurora by the time Neal Marten finished organizing their trip to meet the Council of the Wolves. Hasty messages had been sent, stopping all work on the Aurora Project and warning everyone that the wolves were intelligent, and now they were ready to start out. Pete Riley was at the controls of their helicopter, which was lightly loaded with only Phil, Charley and Rowlf, along with Neal Marten and Jewel Daniels.
"How far is it to this 'Valley of the wolves"?" Pete glanced back over his shoulder as he guided the helicopter away from the afternoon sun.
"No' too far," Rowlf answered. "On into the hills a little way. Far enough if you walk, no' far if you fly like a bird."
The dusty plains unrolled beneath them as they flew, and in the distance the foothills rose up before them. The shadows of scattered boulders lengthened, closer together now that they were approaching the range of low hills that rose before them.
"What's that?" Jewel's keen eyes spotted movement atop one of the boulders. "Down there, something moved!"
Pete let the helicopter settle lower, cautiously approaching whatever it was that she had spotted.
"That's Audrey," Phil declared. "I'd know that head of red hair anywhere, and I think that's Harg with her."
"Take us down," Neal Marten ordered. "Land us in that clearing between the boulders, but be ready to take off in a hurry if we need to."
Rowlf was out the door as soon as the helicopter touched down, calling to Harg and Audrey as he ran.
"It's all right," he called back to his friends. "They've got friends with them."
As soon as Neal and his companions were introduced to Harg, Audrey and Ka-Kachima, they got down to serious business.
"We'll have to agree to treaties concerning our use of Aurora's resources eventually," Neal told them, "but first we need to settle with Steve Jordan and his backers. There is room in the helicopter for you three, so do we head back to our base or should we meet with your council?"
After a short discussion, the helicopter lifted off and headed on to the valley of the wolves.
