Chapter 30: A Special Day for Jennifer

Dave woke early on Friday morning; as he stood in front of the mirror he looked carefully at his bruised face. He could clearly see a trace of yellow spreading under his eyes and he knew that two black eyes would soon color his face. He ate breakfast before he brushed his teeth and left for the Hawk's Hallow Golf Course.

He practiced hard for three hours before he played eighteen holes. He picked up a game with three young juniors and enjoyed playing with the developing players. One youngster said he had seen Dave play hockey the night before and he asked if his face hurt. Dave told him that it only hurt a little; that was true, it looked much worse than it felt.

It was mid afternoon when he returned to the trailer. Jennifer and both families were at the beach so he pulled on his swim suit and went to the pool for a good swim. He had decided he would swim as much as he could to try and maintain his conditioning during the ten days he would be away from hockey.

As he pulled himself from the pool after a tiring forty-minute swim, he saw Jennifer's family car pull through the front gate of the campground. Dave's father arrived home shortly after that and Ron had the barbecue ready at the same time. Julie and Beth were gone out as usual; as Dave sat with Jennifer and both sets of parents he asked, "Mom and Dad, Heather and Ron, as you all know, Dad and I are leaving on Sunday for Hamilton. I was wondering if maybe Jennifer and I could stay at the house in town tonight and tomorrow night? It will be our last time together this summer."

Ron and Heather whispered between themselves as did Roger and Carol. All four parents looked at each other for confirmation and finally all four nodded agreement. Jennifer hugged her parents while Dave hugged his. After eating a large supper, Dave and Jennifer each packed a small bag and kissed their parents goodbye before they left for town.

As they drove to town they talked about the following day. Dave told Jennifer he had a special day planned just for the two of them. He wouldn't tell her what the details were but he did tell her that he had planned most of it for the previous summer - but because of his shooting incident he wasn't able to do it. He told her he was going to the golf course to practice in the morning but from dinnertime on the whole day was hers. Jennifer suggested they invite Katherine to eat with them on Saturday. Dave smiled and agreed.

They also talked about inviting Katherine to join them when they got to town but Dave insisted they keep Friday evening private. It was Jennifer's turn to smile and she agreed.

When they reached the house, Dave called Katherine and invited her to join them for supper the following evening. He had made reservations at a restaurant called the Claddaugh Room. Katherine thanked him for the invitation and agreed to join them.

But I have to make one stop before the tour begins - I need to buy several pairs of long dress pants for the Open. PGA golfers are not permitted to wear shorts." He smiled when he referred to himself as a PGA player.

They stopped at Dow's Menswear - where Roger had told Dave to see Joe. Joe fit Dave for three pair of dress pants: navy, beige, and white. Joe assured Dave he would have them altered by five o'clock. Dave paid and thanked the man before he left with Jennifer.

The tour started at an old house called Beaconsfield. It was the home of the Heritage and Museums Society for QAI. The elegant symbol of Victorian elegance was built in 1877 for James Peake Jr., a prominent shipbuilder. The tour included the first two floors but the curator of the house was also a friend of Roger and he took them up to the third floor which was used mostly for office space. Dave and Jennifer loved the old house and spent over an hour checking out every detail of the classic building.

The walking tour moved to many old homes located throughout the old town and took several hours just to walk from house to house. They toured Province House which was the meeting place for the Fathers of Confederation in 1864. The last house they toured was the former residence for the president of the University of QAI. The residence had been sold by the University because the extravagant building could not be justified as tuitions increased. It had been converted into a luxurious bed and breakfast. Again Roger knew the owner and had arranged for Dave and Jennifer to have a special tour. The huge old Victorian house was exquisite and Jennifer marveled at the detailed design and elegance.

Dave and Jennifer walked arm-in-arm back to Beaconsfield. Dow's Menswear was on the way so they stopped and picked up Dave's dress pants. Joe wished Dave luck in the Open. Dave asked how he knew and Joe told Dave that Roger had called and mentioned the reason he would be in for some pants. When Dave and Jennifer reached Beaconsfield, he put his pants in the car. Jennifer was incredibly pleased with the tour and she kissed him lovingly for creating a special afternoon just for her. They still had thirty minutes before the time Katherine was expecting to meet them so they sat on the veranda at Beaconsfield and looked over the Edwardton Harbour. Jennifer cuddled into Dave's arms and told him how much she loved him and would miss him during the coming winter.

They briefly talked about Dave's college scholarships and Jennifer mentioned that she wished she could go to college with him but the very high relative cost of US universities was just too expensive. They talked about her attending a maritime university and she told him she was now convinced that she wanted to become an engineer. She wanted to design and build extravagant structures. Dave hugged her and told her she would be a wonderful engineer.

When it was time, they went to Dave's car then picked up Katherine. Katherine rubbed Dave's face and asked if it hurt. He smiled and said actually it did not anymore. She thanked Dave and Jennifer for inviting her as they drove to the restaurant. The meal was very nice. Dave had a filet mignon while each girl had a different kind of seafood. They enjoyed sharing a sweet chocolate desert before Dave got the bill and paid for their meal. On the way to Dave's house they stopped at Blockbuster and rented a movie. At the house they sat in the television room and watched the romantic movie. The three teens cuddled on the large couch.

As the movie drew to an end, Jennifer kissed Dave passionately. After their lips parted Katherine kissed him passionately as well.
