My eyes opened up earlier than usual that morning and as I was struggling to see the clock I noticed a strange light in my bedroom it was coming from the window and shinning directly on my body. It was warm and comforting. I rose from my bed and the light seemed to follow me across the room I grabbed my alarm clock to check the time and I was amazed to see that it was only three in the morning. I looked out the window trying to see were this light was coming from since the sun wasn't up yet. I climbed up on the dresser to get a better view but to no avail no matter were I looked I could not see it's base, it was coming from the sky. This puzzled me and thoughts about alien encounters and the X-files started running through my mind. I got dressed and went down stairs as the light followed me down the hall it disappeared when I peaked in the other rooms witch held my sleeping family. They were all fast asleep and didn't wake up as I walked by I went downstairs and put on my coat and shoes. I grabbed a flash light not knowing if I would need it or not but just in case I needed a light or a weapon I would have it.
The light appeared again and it was at the top of the hill behind our house. I climbed the hill and at the other end of the field the light seemed to settle on a shinny piece of metal coming out of a lump on the ground. I looked around not wanting to be caught off guard by something or someone like me who wasn't supposed to be here at three in the morning. I walked slowly across the field eyeing left and right just in case there was something in the woods waiting for me. I felt them before I could see them two people creeping up behind me they were silent and I didn't really see were they were but I could feel them in a strange way. I kept walking toward the piece of metal, a sword now that I was closer, a fine crafted sword by the look of it. as I got nearer to it they got nearer to me I was surpassed they hadn't made a noise but I knew right where they were. I avoided eye contact looking around to take in the field and its occupants one was just to the right of me and the other was farther back on the left. Then it happened I heard a voice, I didn't recognize it, and it wasn't talking to me but I could hear it just as clear as day. "We have to kill him before he reaches the BLADE" then another voice "he doesn't know we are here and he is still far enough away from the sword that it won't protect him. You must strike him dead before he takes up the BLADE!" then like in slow motion I hear it, the swish of a sword slicing through flesh and then a swish again. I fall to the ground not knowing what just happened and pass out.
When I finally came to I stand up startled remembering what just happened to me. I look around and I see two bodies laying at my feet decapitated and still bleeding out. I back away and run into the woods screaming at the sight I have just witnessed. I stop as I realize something is in my hand. I stare at it now wondering how it got their I never touched it or took it from the ground the last thing I remember is being sliced through by a sword. Wait it wasn't me at all who was cut, the sword came out of the ground in a fury and circled behind me I looked at it again and their was still blood dripping from the tip. I froze in a panic and dropped the sword thinking what had just happened letting the morning run through my mind over and over again.
I stepped back and sat on a tree stump looking at the sword on the ground. It was very long and very sharp it seemed to glow as I looked at it and as I reached down to pick it up, it flew to my hand as though it knew I was going to pick it up. I caught it and wiped the blood off of it slowly, so I wouldn't cut myself. it was not heavy as I thought it would be because of its length. I had never touched a sword before although I played with stick and boards in sword play when I was younger. I swirled it around in the air and then over my head as I placed both hands on the sword and drew it above my head I felt a power that I had never felt before it was like something just crawled down my arm to my feet, and then back up again.
I played with the sword a while longer pulling it in and out jabbing and ducking. I was fighting an invisible man I was of course winning. I looked up and saw the sun it was slowly rising up the hill when it hit me. There were two dead bodies in the field above my house with my footprints all around them and I was the killer. in all of my life I had never been so scared I ran down the path to were the bodies had been slain, wondering how I was to dispose of them, when all of a sudden I saw him.
Mr. Johnson was coming up the hill with his tractor and plow. He was a nice man and I always helped him on his farm doing little chores that I could manage. I got in the way more than I helped. He didn't complain he didn't have any family that lived around here he got the farm from a uncle that died a few years back and he has had it ever since. He was one of my best friends but there was no way to explain this to him. I ran down the hill back to my house hoping he wouldn't see me and reached the back door just before he got to that half of the field. I paused as I saw my mom in the kitchen making breakfast I was still carrying the sword and I don't think she would have liked seeing that this early in the morning. I crawled under the windows just avoiding her sight, I had to find a place for the sword. I opened the cellar window and slipped it between the wall and the work bench to keep it hidden.
I walked through the kitchen door just as mom was calling everyone down to breakfast she stared at me in shook. She came over to me and put her hand on my forehead.
"Are you sick, what's wrong, are you feeling all right."
"I'm fine mom can't a guy get up early and go for a walk on his birthday."
"Yes your right son, a normal guy can get up early and go for a walk on his birthday, so which is it are you sick or is there something else the matter."
"Ha, Ha, very funny mom what's for breakfast I'm starving."
"Pancakes and sausage for the birthday boy of course."
"Make mine with a side of presents and you've got a deal," I said as I sat down to the table to eat. It was her turn to laugh now as everyone came down to eat, trying to get the sleepy dust out of their eyes. The day went bye as expected and by the time I opened my second present, I had forgotten all about the events of the morning.
Several weeks went by and I hadn't really remembered the morning of my birthday until I was awakened late one night by my little brother.
"What the hell is wrong with you," I asked.
Looking him right in the eyes wondering why he was in my room at this time of night. He just stared at me or at something behind me, I looked around but I saw nothing in the area that was out of place then it hit me I wasn't in bed. Well I was in bed but I wasn't in bed I was three feet above it almost floating in the air. I reached out grabbing for the bed trying to regain my senses. As I did I fell onto the bed. I laid there for almost a minute before the silence was broken.
"How the hell did you do that, and what the hell is going on with you. Nobody else has noticed the change in you, but I do. Ever since your birthday last month you have been sleeping almost four hours a night and leaving the house early every morning. What the hell is wrong with you."
"I don't know, I feel like I'm going to explode. I've had so much energy, I've been getting up early and going for a run every morning. I can't explain it I don't get tired during the day and my runs keep getting longer and longer. I must have ran ten miles yesterday before school and I wasn't even winded."
"What ten miles are you fucking crazy you were gone less than an hour."
I know but it's true, I can't explain it. HOLY SHIT! THE SWORD! I fell backwards and landed on my bean bag chair.
What? What did you say? The what?
Nothing, never mind I can't talk about it right now. I need some time to think, promise me you won't tell anyone about this conversation. Mom and Dad can never know about this Promise me!
I promise I won't tell them, but you promise me you'll tell me everything from now on, no more secrets.
OK, it's a deal! Now I need to think and get some more sleep. Goodnight!
I waited about ten minutes until I knew he was back in his room and the door was shut, before I walked out into the hallway and down into the cellar. I left the light off so just in case he was still awake he would think I went for my morning run. I went over to the window and reached out trying to find the sword I had hidden there when all of a sudden the sword smacked my hand with a thud. It was like it flew into my hands. Like it knew I wanted it and it came to me. I pulled it out from behind the wall and wrapped it in my shirt. I walked as quietly as I could back to my room, pausing at every creak in the floorboards and every movement in each room I passed hoping that no one would wake up.
