Chapter 19

Late Thursday morning, Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Schneider, the EOUSA managers, arrived for their meeting with James MacFarland and Clarence O’Toole. After exchanging greetings, James and Clarence reviewed their cases. During the presentation and discussions, they made sure to point out that the effort directed toward each case was in proportion to the seriousness of the crimes committed. They felt that this was the best way to convey that the office was being run both correctly and efficiently.

After the meeting, the four went to dinner at a private club. During the conversation over dinner, Mr. Lawrence again brought up the issue of how much time was being spent on extremely difficult or unsolvable cases. From his perspective, the incidents at Larry’s and Dale’s companies and the lodge incident fell into that category. After some discussion, the managers agreed that MacFarland’s office had struck a good balance between all the cases they were pursuing. Once they finished their dinner, the four of them walked out of the restaurant. Waiting at the curb was a limo with a chauffeur by the door open. Mr. Schneider simply said, “James, Clarence, get in.” He smiled as both men barely hesitated before entering the limo. The chauffeur closed the door and went toward the driver’s door.

As the limo pulled away, Mr. Schneider pulled out his cell phone and dialed a number. When the call was answered he said, “The limo is on its way.”
