Ralph was panting to himself happily under the table and I groaned in appreciation at the way-too-expensive ‘artisanal’ iced coffee I took my first sip of. Neither of the two coffee shops I’d passed earlier had outdoor seating, but a quick Googling on my phone had found me one a block and a half north that also advertised itself as dog friendly. A quick drop-off of the poo bag into a public garbage bin and Ralph and I had gone and gotten our orders - me my iced coffee and a chocolate chip cookie, and him a ‘jerky treat’ and doggy bowl of water provided by the baristas.

My one worry, sitting outside with my laptop, was that those thick, grey clouds speckling the sky were going to converge into another summer shower.

I did have work to check in on, but I started with my personal messages.

Cass and Terra were getting close to wrapping up all their packing and loading into the UHaul and were going to order pizza for dinner, watch a movie on Terra’s laptop, and then get to bed early so they could get an early start on their cross-country drive the next morning. There wasn’t anything from Becca or Wanda, but that made sense. Ami had taken a break from editing for a workout and had sent me a cute, sweaty selfie of her in a pink athletic bra, along with a list of books we could read for our mini book club. Leia had been sending more pictures to the group chat throughout the day from her and her friends at the Con, though she kept it to candid and non-work photos - I’d also gotten a picture from her in messages and I was pretty sure she didn’t know it had been sent since it was clearly from Ginny, as it featured the petite OF model in a bathroom stall, one foot propped up on the toilet as she flashed the fact that she wasn’t wearing panties under her costume. I just replied with a Raised Eyebrow emoji, and was proven right when Leia responded with garbled texts as she found out Ginny had pilfered her phone for a hot second to take that picture and send it.

Cattie was all quiet, which worried me a little since she was dealing with her family stuff, so I sent her a string of red and black hearts. A few minutes later, she sent me back a pair of kissing lips, but that was all.

And Zenya had sent me two more videos that I was a little scared to open while in public, and I told her so. She sent me back a chain of Crying Laughing emojis, and told me I was right to be scared, but hoped I enjoyed them eventually.

I sent a picture of Ralph and I at our table to the group chat, and a picture of my wrist and the story of how I got a random hot tattooed girl’s number. The girls immediately started teasing me that I was now a Dog Daddy, which was something I did not need sticking around. Wanda actually replied at one point, though.

More like Ralph got a hot chick’s number. He’s such a ladykiller:P

But then she sent me a private text GIF of a little kid bear hugging a big heart, followed by three Kissy Face emojis. I sent her back a single heart, not wanting to distract her further from her meeting.

With the personal messages out of the way, I moved on to work. The first thing up was checking on the prep for Vera’s ridiculous party - I knew Dayana would have the food and drink rock solid, along with her staff, and I’d already set everything up on Friday for my own prep. The only variables now were Jay and her guest list, and any last-minute wildcards thrown out by Vera. I started by messaging Ada to check in quickly, and she got back to me while I was writing out my next email to let me know there weren’t any changes being requested at that time, but that I was welcome to come visit the Angeloff suite any time, with or without my ‘mysterious fiancee.’

“I’m sure I am,” I sighed to myself, then looked under the table at Ralph, who met my gaze with a ‘What do you want me to do about it?’ look.

My next email was to Jay, checking in on her progress with the guest list. Considering she’d only had one night to start pulling things together and the task was pretty... unique, I wasn’t expecting her to have moved mountains yet. Especially considering she and her business partner had probably had other events they were promoting last night or coming up that night.

My last thing was to text Ash asking after those numbers he’d promised me for the Music Festival booking, and he replied telling me he was finishing them up right then, and I’d have them in fifteen minutes. Whether he was fibbing or not, I couldn’t tell, but I got to just sit and relax as I waited for him to share his work with me.

Seattle, I decided, was nice, but I liked the heat of Vegas. The famous ‘dry heat’ could be a bit much at times, but I was more than used to it now and the cool, overcast breeze rustling down the street I was sitting next to certainly had its charm, but it didn’t feel like summer up here in the Pacific Northwest. At least not summer like I knew it.

Seattle also wasn’t nearly as colourful. Beautiful, sure, but it didn’t have that garish, in-your-face Pizazz of Vegas.

Ash’s email came through, and I was still opening it up when he called me.

“Hey,” I answered. “Just got it now.”

“I’ll need to talk you through it,” Ash said. “I put together some different options since you said we were going loss-leader on this.”

“Alright, I’ve got the sheet open,” I said, quickly eyeballing the work Ash had done. It wasn’t exactly a masterful representation of Excel, but it was probably about as good as I would have been able to manage as well. But I hadn’t written it, so the messy areas weren’t my messy areas. Translation was required.

The numbers we were talking about added up quickly, to the point of being a little scary as something to pitch to the C-suite. Loss Leader was underselling the cost to the hotel that this was going to take to pull off right, and it was going to need a lot of hustle and work for me to sell the cultural win that hosting the festival artists and staff would be. What I was really going to need was some names - artists that the C-Suite, Owners, or someone close to them would recognise that I could hang my hat on to make it feel ‘worth it.’
