Chapter 59: Message from the Past

Fantasy Sex Story: Chapter 59: Message from the Past - For fifty years since the capture and transportation of their forebears to Thurn, the women of a race the Thurnians call Elves have been at the mercy of the citizens of Thurn. Although talented in metal and leather work, it is the Elves beauty and sexual allure to Thurnian men which is in most demand. Wealthy men are now creating private harems of Elf Maidens while government officials wrestle with the problem of the ever-increasing population of Elves in Thurn.

“Wait! Wait!” I shout to Aegle. “What does all that gobbledegook you’ve just said mean?”

“You are all verified as being pure-blood members of the Tomyris sub-species,” replies Aegle. “Only those who retain at least ninety percent of the original Tomyris gene sequence can be considered to be pure-blood Tomyris.”

“I thought Elf Maidens were an off-shoot of the Atenex,” says Arona.

“There are similarities between your two sub-species. The genetic design of the Atenex sub-species makes them between 84% and 91% compatible with Tomyris, and vice versa. However, except in rare random instances, cross-breed offspring are only possible if both parents’ genes are less than 92% purity of their own sub-species, otherwise children will be clones of their mother.”

“Is that as a result of the genetic tinkering our ancient ancestors performed before our forebears were placed in hibernation?” I ask.

“Yes. All the Potiora sub-species belong to the same homo-sapient species as the surviving unmodified humans. However, your ancestors created sub-species that have genetic barriers preventing you from cross-breeding. However, over time those barriers will break down as successive generations of offspring mutate towards a common homo-sapient gene sequence. At first, cross-breeding will be limited to only a few Potiora sub-species. In time, the reproductive barrier between all the Potiora sub-species, and those descended from unmodified humans will also break down.”

“Why do some races mutate at a faster rate than others?” I ask, not willing to let this subject drop, even though it isn’t relevant to my immediate research.

“The Tomyris gene sequence is exceptionally stable, so it will breed true more often than less stable gene sequences,” replies Aegle. “The original gene sequence of the Phebes sub-species is very unstable, and it will quickly mutate through cross-breeding. It will be a dozen or more generations before your descendants will be able to cross-breed on a regular basis.”

“So what’s this second stage you mentioned, Aegle?” asks Arona.

“Those who once lived on this island have left a message to be delivered to any pure-blood Tomyris who ventured here,” replies Aegle. “The message will begin shortly.”

A large rectangular area on the wall in front of us lights up and the image of an adolescent Tomyris female appears. She starts speaking in the ‘elven’ language. Fortunately it’s a language every Elf Maiden’s offspring has been taught during her time in the elven crèche, even though it’s infrequently used in every day life. After a few seconds the text of the words she is saying are displayed in the standard Thurnian language at the bottom of the screen. I presume the sub-titles are courtesy of Aegle.

The young Tomyris tells us a harrowing tale of her people that I can’t fully digest in one go. Arona, Nyra and Maia appear to be equally overcome with the contents of the message. The message lasts for about ten minutes, and I ask for it to be repeated. After two repeats I feel ready to discuss the contents of the message with my companions.

The tale told in the message can be broken down into three parts. Firstly the emergence of the Tomyris from hibernation. Secondly the encounter with men of another Potiora race ... presumably Gregori’s expedition. Thirdly the aftermath of the encounter and a request for action on our part.

“Aegle,” I call to the invisible presence of the intelligent machine. “When did the Tomyris first emerge from hibernation?”

“The first pioneers emerged from hibernation 472 years ago,” replies Aegle. “The rest of the population emerged two years later.”

That means the Tomyris emerged from hibernation around four hundred years later than the races from the six other Potiora.

“And when was the volcanic eruption that destroyed the Tomyris’s initial settlement near the tower?” I ask.

“There were three eruptions over a space of five years. The third was the most devastating, killing eighty percent of the Tomyris population. That was 216 years ago. The survivors abandoned this area and moved south.”

“Was that where they encountered the other Potiora race?” asks Arona.

“Yes. Although Tomyris historical records don’t name the race they met, the timing and consequences of the encounter are consistent with Lampetia’s record of Gregori’s expedition from Thurn.”

The message to us had revealed the tragic outcome of the Tomyris’s encounter with Gregori’s expedition. After the loss of life from the volcanic eruption, little more than a century earlier, the Tomyris population had struggled to recover to around three hundred people. At the time of the encounter with Gregori’s expedition, all of the Tomyris lived near the south coast of this island. According to the Tomyris account of the incident, Gregori’s men kidnapped a hundred fertile women and killed around sixty men. Only forty men and a hundred children survived. Just two female adults escaped the clutches of Gregori’s men.

The Tomyris had no idea whether Gregori’s men would return in the future. With so few adult women, the future of the Tomyris looked bleak. A brave decision was made to place the entire population back into hibernation in the hope that one day, descendants of the kidnapped women would come looking for their forebears’ homeland. It was a huge gamble, although almost certain extinction of their population was the alternative. Nobody knew what fate awaited the kidnapped women, so being able to return and rejoin their kin was never going to be certain. With Gregori’s charts and logs of his exploration destroyed soon after his return to Thurn, it’s clear that the Thurnian rulers wanted to ensure their captives were never able to return to their homeland.

“How many Tomyris are in hibernation, Aegle?” I ask.

“One hundred and twenty three Tomyris are still alive in the chambers below,” replies Aegle.

“So are we expected to awaken those in hibernation and help repopulate the Tomyris community?” asks Nyra.

“We need to discuss the situation with Jaro and the others before we awaken that many people from hibernation,” I reply. “Even if we all volunteer to help, there are too few of us to help repopulate a settlement. If we awaken those below without the resources to feed them, rebuild their settlement, and reproduce in any significant numbers, then they will be no better off than when they entered hibernation.”

“Could we take them back to Thurn?” asks Arona.

“I doubt the Esme’ can carry that many on such a long voyage. Besides, we don’t know what reaction we will get for that idea from those we rouse ... or those in Thurn. I can’t imagine we’ll get thanked by anybody if we turn up with over a hundred people of the same race as Elf Maidens. There’s enough prejudice against Elf Maidens without introducing more into the population.”

“Yes, but there’s a ready supply of Elf Maidens in Thurn who will be eager to mate with Tomyris men,” says Arona.
