Chapter 10

It had been about four months since I paralyzed the driver responsible for the accident that killed Art, Mary, and Cathy, when Cathy contacted Sam and Mary. She said, “Ward paralyzed the lawyer and driver responsible for the accident. They have no voluntary muscle control, and they just lie in bed in a rest home.”

Sam and Mary were horrified by my actions, but Cathy said, “Talk with Ward about why he paralyzed them, so you will understand why he did what he did. I’ll link with you after you have a chance to hear and understand why he did it.”

Sam and Mary confronted me in my home office, so I started explaining it to them.

I said, “Sam, Mary, the drunk driver who killed Mary, Art, and Cathy went to his lawyer early in the morning after the accident. The lawyer advised him to go get drunk so the authorities couldn’t determine what his blood alcohol level was at the time of the accident. The driver did what his lawyer told him to do, and it worked. The lawyer’s trickery had gotten the driver off from driving while intoxicated charges without prison time on several prior occasions.

“I felt they were both responsible for Cathy, Art, and Mary’s deaths, because the two of them had conspired to prevent the law from exacting justice on prior occasions.

“I wanted a piece of the asshole lawyer almost as much as I wanted that asshole driver’s ass. I wanted to punish both of them in the worst possible way. It took me a while but I finally decided that a long life of total paralysis combined with total mental isolation was the worst fate that I would want inflicted on me. I knew that I could paralyze them in a way that looked like a stroke, and leave them totally paralyzed and unable to speak.

“Then I could pay them semiannual visits, so I could use my abilities to ensure that they lived a very long life. During my visits, I wanted to be able to have them look on my face and hear why I had paralyzed them. Total isolation wouldn’t work for it would drive them crazy to the point they lost touch with reality. I wanted them to be aware of the world and what they were missing.

“I started with the lawyer. Two months after the driver began his one year in prison, the lawyer had a stroke. He was mute and lost all of his voluntary muscle control. As a result, he would spend the rest of his life lying in a bed in a care facility. I have visited him a couple of times since his stroke.

“The driver completed his year in prison. During the first month of his parole, he had a stroke and suffered the same fate as the lawyer.

Revenge is not nice, but they did not deserve nice. I could have killed them easily, but somehow the thought of those two assholes unable to move or speak is very satisfying. I plan to use my medical abilities to ensure they live very long lives.

Sam and Mary looked at each other, and Mary said, “Now we understand and agree they deserved to be punished harshly, we don’t have a problem with what you did.”

Mary said, “Cathy wanted to link with us once we understood why you did what you did.”

Cathy must have been waiting for us to finish for she linked with the three of us.

Cathy said, “Ward, The Guidance Council and I disagree with your revenge. We believe it is wrong to prevent an individual from living their life for it prevents them from learning the lessons they need to learn.

“By preventing them from learning their lessons, you are actually hurting yourself. The Council in the Fifth Dimension is aware of what you did. If you allow your vengeance to continue, the Fifth Dimension Council may prohibit you from being elevated to the Fourth Dimension.”

I knew my agreement with the Fourth Dimension Council required permission of the Council in the Fifth Dimension. I wanted to be with Cathy more than I wanted vengeance, so I decided to modify my solution by removing the paralysis from both men.

“All right, I’ll set the situation right.”

Later that night, I removed the paralysis from the lawyer but left him with two irresistible compulsions. If he continued his career as a defense lawyer, he would seek justice for his client and justice does not mean ‘getting the client off.’ If he knows that the client is innocent of the charges, he will seek dismissal of the charges or a not guilty verdict. However, if he knows the client is guilty, he will seek a judgment that is fair for both the client and the victim. That means guilty clients will hopefully receive a punishment suitable to their crimes. I wasn’t sure how to have him handle a client’s defense if he was unsure as to the client’s innocence or guilt. I left that as him doing his best without the use of improper tricks and tactics. He was familiar with a lot of those. The second compulsion was to not communicate the details of my visits with him.

Then I removed the paralysis from the driver who killed Cathy, but I only gave him one compulsion, which was to not communicate the details of my visits with him.

His fate would be self-determined, but his history told me what it would be. I checked his thoughts a month later and learned he had returned to drinking and driving. He had plans for stopping at a bar that afternoon on the way home from work.

I was outside the bar in my car waiting for him when he came out of the bar. I watched him stagger to his car and get behind the wheel. When he drove out of the parking lot, I pulled in behind him. I linked with him and gave him a series of instructions that resulted in him being arrested for driving under the influence. He would be returned to prison to serve the remaining years of his sentence behind bars with no chance of parole, which amounted to about forty years.

I told Sam and Mary what I had done during dinner that night. Sam said, “That sounds like a fitting end for him. Considering his current age, he would likely die in prison, but he chose to do what led to him being sent back to prison.”

Lately, my days have been busy. I would spend four to six hours at my company, and at least two hours a day working on the Mission planning. My wives were busy also. In addition to their jobs, they spent time on household chores, shopping, and if they had time and energy left, working on planning the Mission.

I began to think about what I could design and sell to finance the Mission. When the Guidance Council finished organizing what they considered my personal finances they would start organizing my Mission finances.

I had recently talked with Cathy about what I could design and sell to finance the Mission. When the Guidance Council finished with my personal finances, Cathy contacted me.

“Ward, the Guidance Council has finished organizing your personal finances. They want to know what you are going to design and sell.

“My Guidance Council representative, Jan, and I were talking about things you could design, and we decided it should be something beneficial for the environment. Jan thinks the biggest environmental problem on Earth is the pollution from carbon-based fuels, especially coal and oil.

“We decided that a solar-powered car would be ideal. We talked with the Council about devices that could be used in the design of an all-electric solar-powered car and they recommended three devices that are very advanced technology compared to Earth’s equivalents. The devices’ designs are different from Earth’s version of the devices, but they can be made using Earth’s current technology. They are a high-capacity battery, a solar cell that converts the energy in the entire electromagnetic spectrum impinging on the solar cell to electricity, and a high-efficiency motor-generator.

“That seems like a good idea, Cathy. Did the Council have anything else that I could use to create devices that could be sold?”

“We didn’t think to ask, Ward. I’ll let them know you may want to create other products, and see what they have.

“The Council will provide you with the design of the solar cell, storage battery, and motor-generator when you are ready to start your design effort.”

“All right, tell them I am ready to start now, but I will also need the technical knowledge related to the design of the items.”

“The Guidance Council told me that I needed to warn you about creating these devices without a development period. The Council said you will need to conduct a series of experiments that will lead to the final design, which is what they will provide. They believe it is likely to take at least two years to design all three devices. In the interim, you can design a car that will use these devices. That will explain why you are creating three drastically different devices.”

“Okay, Cathy, I can see their logic and agree with it, although two years seems excessive to me. Did the Council have anything else to say about the three devices?”

“They think that you should begin work on all three devices at once. I don’t remember everything they said, but they said the battery will be the easiest to create, and the solar cell the most difficult. They think your car’s initial design should be a full-size car. The motor-generator and battery can be scaled up or down in size for different size vehicles. They also said that with a relatively minor design change to the battery you can create small rechargeable batteries.

“The solar cell will be very different from Earth’s current solar cell technology. The frequency spectrum of Earth’s current solar cells is in the range of four hundred to seven hundred nanometers. That spectrum is actually a very narrow band of the electromagnetic spectrum. Your solar cells will convert the energy of the electromagnetic spectrum from lower portion of the Gamma band of frequencies to the upper portion of the Radio band of frequencies to electricity.

“The individual solar cells will have a low voltage, low current output. However, a string of modules can be created by interconnecting the modules in series to increase the string’s output voltage. Connecting multiple, identical series strings in parallel will increase the total current output by the multiple series strings of solar cells.

“The battery’s design will be very similar to Earth’s current battery design. The primary differences will be the types of materials used in the construction of its plates and its electrolyte.

“The Council said something about Earth’s scientists not fully understanding how electrical coils wound on an armature interact with Earth’s magnetic field. They mentioned something about changing the way the windings are wrapped on the armature will increase the efficiency of the motor-generator to well over ninety percent. Do you know what they meant?”

“I understand most of what you said. Once I get the theory of the motor-generator I will understand what you said.”

“All right, Ward. I will let the Council know you need the design and supporting theory of the three devices. It may take a while before the Council provides me with the information you need.”

Getting my personal life in order and taking Sam and Mary on as my wives had taken a over two years from the time Cathy died. During my recovery period, Cathy, Sam, Mary, and I started on creating the plans for the Mission and my Inner Council and Action Groups. Don’t think we worked on the planning full-time, for we didn’t. We had other thing going on that required a good bit of our time.

We started by dusting off the first cut of my structure for the Inner Council and Action Groups. I told Sam and Mary that the Council did not think I had a good feel for the number of people and length of time I would require to complete each task. I told them that Cathy had asked if I had been considering a single country when I created the structure, and I said that I had.

Sam said, “I think I see why the Council thought that, Ward. This planning would probably work for a single task in a single country. However, once you get started you will be working on multiple tasks in the country. The current planning is just too simple for successfully completing a large complex task. The situation will be even worse when you are concurrently working on multiple tasks in multiple countries.

Mary said, “I agree with Sam. Your first cut is going to need extensive revision.”

I replied, “Yes, I know. Everything Sam said about the structures of the Inner Council and Action Groups is true. We need to redefine the structures. What I see is, we will start Tasks 1, 2, and 3 in a small country. The plan will need changes, but it should be adequate for the first country. Then we will expand into multiple countries, and our structures will need to be modified to meet the increased size of the effort and number of people involved in the tasks.”

Sam said, “You’re right. This plan is too simple for a large group of countries, and a plan for a large group is too complex for a single small country. What we need is a plan for a small group to start the tasks in a single country, and then we need to revise the plan for expansion into other countries.

“The revisions we make to the plans will need provisions for maintaining what we accomplished in the first country and define how we will accomplish the tasks in the next country. In the next country, we will have to recruit a new Action Group for each task, which is just one of the things that will make expanding into other countries difficult. Especially when we start to simultaneously expand into multiple countries.

Each time we move into another country, we will need a new plan for that country and that plan will have to maintain our accomplishments in the former countries we took over. I think the Task Cell for each task will need multiple groups. The Task Cells will each probably need one group to plan for the acquisition of the next country, at least one group to continue the effort of gaining control of the countries we are currently acquiring, and multiple groups for maintaining the countries we already acquired.”

I said, “You’re right, Sam. I was trying to create a single plan for managing a group no matter how large it became. Let’s revise this plan for immediate use in taking over our first country. Then once we have begun the effort in that country, we can outline the changes that will be needed to create a plan for acquiring our next countries while maintaining our first country.”

Mary said, “Ward, there is one other major factor that we are overlooking, and need to include it in our planning; and that is time. Since we will not complete the Mission in our lifetimes, we need to include how we are going to recruit, train, and integrate new people into the Inner Council to replace those who burnout, lose interest in the Mission, retire, or die. In about fifteen years, our children will be old enough to start helping us with the Mission. We will consider them for replacing people we lose, but by then the Inner Council will be very large, so we will need to recruit other people also.”

We talked about updating my first cut at a plan to incorporate the ideas Sam and Mary proposed for taking over our first country. We decided to postpone working on the plans for expanding into other countries, until we had a better idea of what we would need in the future. We did record our thoughts and ideas for how the current plan would have to be revised.

We tried to do a realistic evaluation of what we could accomplish in the next twenty years. We decided to limit our initial effort to Task 1 and Task 2. Once we expand into our second country, it may be time to start Task 3 in the first country we acquire. We agreed that starting Task 4 should wait until the other three tasks were almost complete. That meant Task 4 would not be started within our lifetime. However, we could discuss it and document our ideas for use by future generations.

For Task 1 and Task 3, we broke the task’s main steps down to macro steps, and then broke the macro steps down into micro steps. Some of the micro steps had to be broken down even further. We then started to plan how to complete each of the micro steps. This effort would require a long time to complete. During that time, I would also be working on designing a solar-powered car. By the time we completed planning the effort to complete all of the micro steps, we would have a fairly detailed plan that could be adapted to meet the specific situations and changes that we would encounter during performance of the two tasks in our first country. We would have to fine tune our plan once we decided which country would be our first country.

Following our decision to put Task 3 on hold, Cathy contacted me.

“Ward, I thought I would let you know that the Council is in full agreement with deferring Task 4. But, there is some information about Task 3 that they have not had me pass on to you. I doubt that the information will affect your start date for the task, but it will affect the task’s duration.

“The Council is divided on how long the Task 3 will take to complete. One group of Council members believes it will take you longer to complete Task 3 than it will to complete Task 1.”

“Why do they think Task 3 will take longer than Task 1, Cathy?”

“I suppose you can say that for Task 1 and Task 2, people feel threaten or harmed by the governments and the media. However, Task 3 does not offer the type of threat that the other two tasks present. At least, people fail to see any harm in the poor examples that celebrities represent.

“The problem with this type of threat is that the link between the problem and its cause is not clear. Furthermore, many people do not believe that celebrities being poor role models is the cause of many of society’s problems. They want the cause to be something else; something that they can easily identify as the cause. There is also a very high turnover in celebrities. This means that a specific celebrity will only influence their fans for several years, and that is not long enough to have their harmful actions have a significant effect on a person’s behavior.

“It is the cumulative effect of multiple celebrities over a long period of time that is affect their fans’ behavior. Since most celebrities don’t last very long and since there are other factors that can bring about the same change in a person’s behavior, it is very difficult to prove that poor role models are the major cause of the changes in their fans’ behavior.

“Most people blame the environment in which their society’s members were raised for their poor behavior. To a certain extent, this is true for there are many factors that contribute to poor behavior. However, if you break our social environment down into specific factors, you will find that celebrities are one of the factors and they contribute far more to the poor behavior of people than the other factors combined. That comment is based on the Guidance Council’s experience with many societies, and they acknowledge that their belief is extremely difficult to prove.

“Completion of Task 3 will require the members of society to accept that their cult heroes and others that they hold in high esteem are the ones responsible for many of our social problems.

“Personally, Ward, I don’t know which task will take the longest. I believe that the Guidance Council’s plan is the only way to complete this task, but I don’t know how you are going to get the celebrities’ financial supporters to withdraw their support.”

“I have an idea of how that can be done, Cathy, but I’m not certain how effective it will be.

“My idea is to focus public attention on the reasons why a celebrity is a bad role model. However, I will actually be attacking their supporters using a ‘guilt by association’ approach. The difficulty with the approach is, the public likes celebrities who have a bad boy, or girl, reputation. Therefore, I need to portray them as evil people, and that is the weakness in the approach. Most of these celebrities are bad role models, but they are not evil people.”

“That is true, Ward. I suppose the only thing you can do is to begin the task when you have the support and financing necessary, and then modify your approach based on the effectiveness of what you do.”

“Yeah, thanks for the heads up, Cathy. My plan for Task 3 sounds a lot like my approach to Task 1 and Task 2. Start the task and adapt as I go.”

While we were revising the plans for the Inner Council, Action Groups, Task 1, and Task 2, Cathy talked with Sam and Mary about my next woman. I didn’t find out about it until later, but she told them that it was time for them to find me another wife. She said that according to my organizational structure, I needed a minimum of three wives to accomplish the tasks of raising our children, staffing the Inner Council, helping me manage the Task Cells for Task 1 and Task 2, and earning the money to fund the Mission.
