A month later, everyone gathered in a conference room at the request of Assistant District Attorney Lorne Biguere. On his left sat Diego and Reina; on his right, the Pikes and their attorney. Opposite them sat a stenographer.
Biguere started the meeting. “The purpose of this pre-trial conference is to see if we can resolve these questions without going to trial on the numerous charges pending against the Pikes. That means establishing a plea agreement to plead no contest, probation requirements, and binding agreements satisfactory to Casey’s guardians: Carneros, Walsh, and Gutierrez.
“Are you ready to proceed, Mr. and Mrs. Pike?”
“Yes,” grumbled Pike. Rei spoke for her side of the table.
“Our objective is simple. Casey has been terrorized and abused for years by this ... person. She needs never to see him again. We have two ultimatums for them, Mr. Biguere. The first is that the Pikes sell their property in Gila County, and place one-third of the net proceeds in a trust for Casey that we will create and administer.”
“One-third! She’s just a girl!”
“Mr. Pike, it’s not your turn. Continue, Ms. Carneros.”
“Second requirement: once the sale is complete, with transfer of title, the Pike family will entirely relocate and remain at least 1,000 miles away from Phoenix with absolutely no contact until Casey turns 21. That future date will be part of his probation. Example cities beyond 1,000 miles are Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago, Kansas City, and New Orleans. Excluded states are California, Colorado, Texas, and Utah.”
