The Escapade (a poem)

Drifting in the stream of life
Do I luxuriate in the consistency of rules?
Which have been so carefully and
Prayerfully laid out as my guide
Or do I fight the current,
Struggling for what lies beyond the trees
Which lushly line the river’s edge
And act as the veil of uncertainty
Saying goodbye to those voices of caution
That beseech me to mind my ways
Or forever live in danger of losing my soul.
And what is my soul?
I’ve asked – been offered explanations
By those who claim to speak with God,
But those are stream-bound definitions
Spoken of in words long past
Fixed to the star of age-old wisdom
By those mired in skull-bound intransigence
Who tread on stones which lie unturned
Indifferent to the realm of exciting possibilities
Since I’ve left the current
I think more of what is in my mind
And allow thoughts to spring without restraint
In which I see no penalty
And those thoughts
Which now spring unreservedly
Allow me to live more freely
Are perhaps self-solvable
I search for meaning that has no limitation
And presents itself to be held up to the light:
Explored, understood,
If understanding is within my realm
In seeking others who share my thoughts
Am I merely seeking another stream,
Another easy current in which to drift
In the comfort of those who think like me
And thus—do I eschew the escapade?
