Preface

We all lived in the small Island of Mauritius. The name of my wife was Gina and her mother May who was orphan and lived with her uncle in the north of the Island. At the age of 15 May became pregnant from a man working as male nurse in the local hospital. At that time it was a shame if a girl is pregnant before marriage.

The uncle decided to send May to a convent. The parents of the man who were Hindu but catholic came to see the uncle and asked to take care of May and said that after the birth of the baby their son will marry May and recognize the child as his.

The uncle accepted and May went to live with the Hindu parents who although catholic have kept their Hindu culture and spoke Hindi at home. May quickly learned the language to be part of the family. After the birth of the girl, May, got special dispensation to marry the man and continued to live with the man’s family with the baby. Gina was raised in the Hindu environment and even went to Hindi classes during weekends so she was fluent in Hindi speaking.

When Gina was 10 years old the father had a promotion and transferred to the City hospital as nursing supervisor, they therefore left the Hindu family and moved to the City and their way of life changed. They had new friends and Gina attended new Catholic school.
