The Conquest (a Poem)

Long have I tried to attract your feminine glance
But you, so demure keep looking away
Impeding the hopes of my chance
That someday we might play
Until the day I spoke to you
You showed no concern for the dance
You walked away with your back to me
Telling me I had no chance
But then you turned and flirted
Your eyes kept following me
We talked again and then you agreed
That I would have coffee, and you a cup of tea
Our talk was current and thoughtful
Your words, a torrent at times
With laughter and tears, you told of your fears
But tempered those prospects with forceful lines
You spoke of your passions so strong and intense.
Belying the shyness I first discerned
You gave so freely but openly spoke.
Of how you gave and were used and spurned
I thought should I tell how you captured my eye
And was so disappointed when you walk away
But when you turned with that smile on your face
You gave me such hope with your style and your grace
I thought there was hope we talked and you said
That you thought I was cute, and it went to my head
I asked you out, and you said “I’d be delighted
And the movie we saw had us both excited
And here we are just after three dates
Snuggling in bed with big smiles on our faces
I’m comfortable with you as you are with me
It’ll be an all-nighter that’s plain to see.
